I just recently posted this reply to Tashman:

You can retrain a unit by sending it to a province that has the necessary buildings to produce that type. On the next turn, open the unit training queue screen, then click on the unit on the map to select it and then grab the unit icon in the tray at the bottom of the screen and drop it in the training queue.

This will replenish the unit to full strength and provide any weapons or armor or honor upgrades that the province provides.

I routinely merge depleted units. I try to merge units of similar quality, but you can get 'free' upgrades by dropping an unarmored depleted unit onto an armored one - the combined unit will get the armor upgrade. If you drop an armored unit onto an unarmored unit you will lose the upgrade.

I know this is the penultimate newbie response, but...

Let's say I've got a Yari Ashigaru unit in a province with a castle and spear dojo. He's been there for several turns, being the garisson after conquering. 10 men left. I open the Training dialogue, works fine. But I can't select anything on the map in order to get their little square boxes on the bottom (the ones you drag to merge). I can click on a unit all day, click on every part of him, but it won't select as long as the Training dialogue is open. Likewise, if I select him first, opening the Training dialogue de-selects him. I've tried this with a vanilla S:WE install and with v.1.12.

Maybe it's something they "fixed" in the S:WE pack (as opposed to an original S:TW which was upgraded to WE later?)?

Will do screenshots tomorrow if that's not the case.

Well, 1.12 is the patch for old shogun while 1.02 is the patch for WE. That could be a problem.

Other than that, don't know what your doing wrong...reinstall perhaps.

Ah-hah! There was a distinct lack of any note of that in the readmes or the main site. My programming instructors would have had their heads on a stick!

I also may have been had. Everything in my box is S:WE... but the discs themselves aren't labelled as such. If so, I'll just have to keep my eye out next time I hit the malls.

Is the opening clip a guy with sword with the sun behind him? That would be old shogun...otherwise if it's the Ran clip it's WE. It should say so in the game somewhere.

Yup, I've been had. Tried a reinstall and then the 1.02 patch... no diff. Reinstall and the 1.12 patch, good diffs. :) Can't complain--all I've got to do is go without my extra pickmeup coffee 3 days this week. If I make it every day, then I can go hunting for MI. :)

Well, it only costs £5 for Warlord Edition (Shogun w/ Mongol Invasion) so you may as well get that instead of trying to get Mongol Invasion on its own... At least if you get WE you can use your original Shogun as a back up copy
