Right, first post here. In fact, I'm so desperate I just have to post this.

The situation was: I'm playing as Thrace, own most of the greek peninsular, except for a few lands owned by the brutii, which are my protectorate.
I want Thermon, it's in Brutii hands. Then I had a funky idea.

*Diplomat runs to Brutii leader*

"The high lord of Thrace offers you a hundred thousand gold coins in exchange for the town of Thermon!"

"What? A hundred thousand for that crummy little village? Gee, thanks! We can use that money to fight the evil Dacians!"

*gold goes to Brutii treasury*

*Thermon switches into Thracian hands*

*end of turn*

*Brutii keeper of Treasury opens the vault*

"Wow, lads, we've got an excess 100k gold in here! Put it into the boxes over there and ship it to Thrace!"

And so they did, promptly returning every cent I paid for Thermon.. repeated the same thing for Segestica just to make sure.. then I started crying.

What do you think? My thought: Protectorates are.. well.. iffy. And the AI gets more stupid with every idea I have.
