Well, I would point that the different Roman factions do have some different units, but I think you're just having fun with the smilies.
I am a relative newcomer to this forum as well and, like yourself, didn't really understand everything at first. So I read through some of the topics and the very helpful RTW guides and then, after a while, I realised I was able to answer someone else's query, venture an opinion of my own or add a further question to another topic and so I started replying to other people's threads. And their reaction has always been favourable and productive.
One day, if I discover something of enough significance, I might post a thread of my own.
So julii caesar I would suggest, if you want to become properly involved in this forum, you read through the guides and some of the other topics and look for one where you think you could make a real contribution. (My first one, for example, was about the pros and cons of British chariots which I had some experience of in my own campaign.)
Once you have that bit of experience under your belt, you'll be able to tackle starting your own threads with a lot more confidence.
BTW I was going to go into a whole young Julius Caesar anecdote here about his time in Spain, but I think I'll play with the smilies instead.
