Thread: Buildings on the Battlefield

    Default Buildings on the Battlefield

I just fought several battles where the battlefield included buildings.

For example, my army land blockaded a port, and then the enemy came to relieve the blockade, prompting a batlle where there was the actual port on the map (in the playable area.)

Tip: While it might seem like the Port could be a mini fortress, it's actually not a physical barrier. Kind of cool to see units pass through walls.

I also had some weird effects when I had units in a graveyard - but it did work to block the enemy a bit.

I also had some Roman scum hide in a tiny space behind a huge rock in the corner of a battlefield....the rock was cut by the red lines making them impossible to attack.

I have some nice screenshots, but no idea how to post them.

thats bizzare!!! in all my many many campaigns i have never seen a port on the battlefield, ive had rebels who blockade my port & yet when i attack the battle is usually at a crossroads away from the coast, but the rebels have been standing in the port itself hhmmm

This is a shot from inside the port after the battle started.

As you can see, I had my guys facing the wrong way since I thought the Bruti couldn't pass through the Port's walls.

Then the magic window opened up for those pila.

I wish I had an original shot with the port itself.

Here's a shot of those Scipii scum running once I got my guys turned around.

They actually walk through the walls of the port!

You can see some doing this in the background.

I need to get better skillz at screenshots though.

Okay, this is just weird. How come you have to be the special one who gets to fight in a port? And which port was it? Which province/city's port was it?

    What the heck???

This is odd... I thought the buildings would be solid like those farms we have seen already.

I've had a port fight but it was off to the side & I fought in the middle of the map.
Wierd that the port is like that

Anyone tried moving units out onto the grey shore?
maybe those guys should be doing something more useful...

    It was Capua's port.

I came from the north, blockaded and then got attacked.

Careful attacking of rebels is more likely to be effective in letting you see such things.

I dunno about you guys but for some reason I seem to feel a lot more closely connected to the 1.2 battle maps.
They seem to somehow more closely relate to the campaign map.
I guess its probably a combo of me having given up on Rome quite quickly & the definite improvements in the ambience of the battle map.
Improvements I've noticed (possibly some are not real improvements?):
    sun disk & lens flare
better texturing outside the main battle area
much better & more varied atmospheric effects
more real looking terrain features (looks less like perlin noise)
more likely to find useful terrain in useful places
    (surprisingly) distant structures visible
nearby structures visible & even plonked it the middle of the battlefield (had a watchtower like that)
    boats visible

Unfortunately there's a downside, that being the mysterious grey square shorelines.
maybe those guys should be doing something more useful...

Yes the grey shores are part of the 1.2 patch. They are an extension of land so that when you attack an army and there back is to the sea they can actually deploy on land. Otherwise there was a little nasty CTD because the enemy would be dployed in the ocean.

The grey areas are an intentional feature? WTH?! I should think CA could do better than that.

It has. And you can even see the lighthouse in the distance. Too bad they couldn't make a real port city, but have to keep it inland.
