    You can also try......an infantry square! (Again weak inf. factions!)

    If they come at you in 1 long line and you know that their inf wont take much of a beating (Hillmen, Easter Spearmen etc....tht sort of class) arrange your best troops at the head of the square, you most durable troops on the side and some good strong troops at the back too.

    When they've got relatively close to you, charge the formation as a whole and set your front line to do the attacking and the durable troops tohold the flanks. The enemy inf shouldn't hold long and you should have created a gap in the middle whcih you can then clear up the rest of the enemy army with/

    I generally actually use the checkerboard technique for width.
    The front line Hastati can thus cover a wider area while the Principes are still effectively reserves even though their width counts towards the front line.

    I don't like to spread my army thin with the whole super formation piercing ability of cavalry.
    maybe those guys should be doing something more useful...
