Default So does the boiling oil actualy do anything?

OK - so I have played this game a hell of a long time, but one question always gets me stuck: does the boiling oil thrown down at the gates of a siege actually do anything?!

I aks because it never seems to do anything other than make a lovely black puddle. Maybe morale is effected? I dunno, can anyone help?

It usually makes hell of a mess of any unit I've sent to chop down gates the old-fashioned way; haven't you heard the screams?? Maybe save a replay and watch closely, it's messy

It's also an excellent way to remove low quality heirs, boiling oil happily ignores armor.

I think Jag meant if you're defending a castle. I haven't seen that it really does that much to the AI when I'm defending, but it really kills off my gate chargers when I'm sieging a castle.

Bingo. That is exactly what I have noticed, it simply never kills off any of the AI, it is only the arrows which do any form of damage.

Ive seen the effects both ways. Kepp the cursor hovered over the unit assaulting you, once the boiling oil hits em they lose a few men. One problem Ive had is whith "skittish" AI units charging and recharging, I think the oil is only triggered by sustained assault.

If you attack wooden structures, you automatically use fire catapult stones.

    And arrows!

Has anyone tried copying the AI and charging and withdrawing to avoid oil? (I usually just batter down walls)
We all learn from experience. Unfortunately we don't all learn as much as we should.

Peasants are perfect for opening the gates...

Peasants are not good for opening gates, the oil has a huge effect on them along with the arrows, they will get a large morale penalty and most likely run.
