You need to complete a campaign as Rome to unlock other factions, or you can mod the files to allow it immediately.

"An expansion should be a free standing new feature product, not a bug fixing enticement." - Old Celt
People suggested completing a short campaign (15 provinces for victory?) if you are in a hurry to play as the barbarians as the full Imperial one (50 provinces) is rather an epic.
Also, if you wipe out a given action as Romans, I believe you unlock it.
Easiest thing might be modding as was suggested - it's a question of a single text file, IIRC. I can't recall the specifics, but a search "unlocking factions" or some such should dig up a thread that gives the required info. (Or a more informed person might chip in here).
I would say that the Roman campaigns are some of the most fun, however, if only because of the Senate missions and greater variety of General's speeches. Playing barbarians can seem a little quiet by contrast.
There are three ways to get other factions
1. Eliminate individual factions to play as them. Only unlocks the playable factions though.
2. Win long/short Imperial campaign to play all playable factions. Only unlocks the playable factions though.
3. Mod to play all factions (including nonplayable)
To do number 3 do this, but back up the file descr_strat first.
You need to go into C: (or whatever partition you installed RTW onto) then go through folders Activision/Rome - Total War/Data/World/Maps/Campaign/Imperial_Campaign/descr_strat then edit-cut the unplayable factions and edit-paste them under the playable ones.
If you want to do 2, I would personally suggest doing what I did for my first campaign. Julii, short campaign on E/E settings, and be aggressive from the start, taking any rebel or Gaul provinces as quickly as you can. I also auto calced all battles, just to speed it up.

I still dont get y CA made it able to play as the nonplayable ones but made it so u had to mod em in..... could it be cuz to release the game within the date they wanted they couldnt finish movies and descriptions for em all? I mean sumthing supporting this is all theu nlockables have movies and the nonplayables r movies of other factions(kinda weird) but the settlements r where they should be..... also some nonplayables such as macedon has a description. Ne1 else think this may be y or have a better solution?
Actually even when you mod to unlock the non-playable factions they draw one of the cultural movies. Macedon gets the greek one. Scythia and Dacia get the barbarian one, Numidia the same as Carthage. And Pontus and Armenia get the same one as Parthia.
If you havin' skyrim problems I feel bad for you son.. I dodged 99 arrows but my knee took one.
VENI, VIDI, NATES CALCE CONCIDI
I came, I saw, I kicked ass
While I uinderstand from developing-resource point, not all factions are playable, I can't forgive CA that they made Macedon unplayable. Why, why, why???

CA's or Activisions decision.
Probably Activision but CA coded them out in a text file allowing that file to get ripped by even the nonmodders.

If you want to unlock them but can't be bothered doing it yourself, go here:
All fractions mod
Please can someone tell me what IIRC means?
Many thanks
It means If I Remember Correctly, IIRC :DOriginally Posted by Feanor
If violence didn't solve your problem... well, you just haven't been violent enough.
Most likely. The fact that they're unplayable means that they're not as fully 'realised' as the playable factions, whether be it in terms of tech trees or unit diversity or bells & whistles or whatever.Originally Posted by LegolasII
But it would have been far worse not to make them playable at all. Being able to mod them in is a fair compromise. Play as them, sure, but you know you do so at your own risk (especially the Senate) because you're making the programme do something it wasn't designed to do.

It also, means that they are officially unsuppoted.
So don't complain if game crashes with Rebel and Senate factions.
