Default What determines the cost of a crusade?

I mean, what are the factors that influences the cost of papal support for a crusade?
Usually i could start it with 500-100 florins, but the last one i made sucked me a whoppin' 3000, without giving me nothing better than usual... I feel robbed lol

I am not sure, but I think it includes your kings piety and the target province crusade status (gray or red). It may include your relationship to the pope, but I'm not sure about that one.

What's the difference between gray and red status?
Also, i observed that the pope asks for mone money if you attack a nations that has been excommunicated the previous year, like he was somewhat inclined to give them a second chance lol.

I'm not sure it's your own status with the Pope (besides being excommunicated and such), but the religion of your target is a factor--the Byzantines are expensive to crusade, because they're still Christians, albeit Orthodox and not Catholic. The Egyptians or Almohads (or Turks) are cheap, though, because they're Muslim. The other country's status with the Pope is also, of course, important. Factions he demands countries crusade against require little extra money spent to crusade.

    Thanks.
That's not really a big issue but since i'm modding the game and modified the crusades quite a bit (they cost more but gets nice extra units) the AI might suffer a bit...

If the Pope asked for a Crusade against a specific faction, it'll cost a grand total of 0 florins to launch one against that faction (in easy and normal at least).. at least I never had to pay

Yep, but if the excommunicated faction has an old king, or the pope itself is old you'd start it ASAP...
Plus in my games i always need it because the french are the juggernaught...
