Whisky - any favourites?

Just came home from a Whisky-tasting that a local pub is doing regularly (so please excuse any typos - I am slighely pished ).

The tasting was focused on Scotch Whiskys and was including some great samples of a 29-year old Glen Grant an 18-year old Talisker and a nice Caol Ila.

As this is the Tavern I am sure there are some other Whisky-drinkers in here.

What are your favourites?

For me a Lagavulin, Ardbeg or a Talisker are a perfect companion for some late night discussions with good friends

Talisker (or however you spell it) is pretty good. As generally are the other western and island whiskys.

I'm not a great expert by any means though.

The once in a blue moon that I have scotch, I'd usually go with Glenfiddich.

For whiskey, prolly Tullamore Dew.

I really just drink a glass of wine or two these days, though. With lots of water and coffee throughout the rest of the day.

I'm none too fond of really smokey whisky. The milder sorts are suitable. Let's see, Scapa 12yrs is the one I've bought the most of.

I had the same experience when I worked in Scotland...

I liked the Antiquary (sp?) and it came in the strangest shaped bottle I've ever seen....or mebbe it just looked strange after drinking it

Still 120 proof is impressive, off topic I know but I had some 120 proof spirit some time ago...Polish Pure Spirit it was called...the fumes off the glass was enough to burn the lips

Talisker or Laphroaig are my favourites. Can never quite decide which one I like more. You can get cask strengths if you want 'em, not sure what the proof is but its about 59% alcohol. Personally I stick to the regular 10 year old.

The regular one is the best.
The pure, crisp taste of a tarred leather boot salvaged from a peaty marsh.

I prefer any brand that is coursing throughout my blood stream. Thats the best whisky.

Lagavulin and Laphroaig for me. Though now that some of you have recommended Talisker, I'll give it a shot.

A little home-brew corn whiskey made out in the woods by an old hillybilly carrying a double barrell shotgun. Who bottles his whiskey in a mason jar - and sends it straight down the hill to his buddies. Its smooth and burns all the way down your system. And is about as close to pure as one can safely drink. Every now and then - well they do say that moonshine will make you blind.

On a smooth drinking whiskey night when I take my whiskey straight - I prefer Jim Beam -

At other times I prefer my catcus whiskey straight with just a little salt and lime.

If it had to be Scotch, it would probably be Lagavulin.

For Irish whisky I would take the oldest bottle of Bushmills I could find. I've had the ten yar-old single malt and it was reeeealy nice. Bit I'd love to find a bottle of this...



For rye it would be Canadian Wiser's 18 year-old.

Both my Dad & my last ex-Girlfriend both love whisky, but me, I find whenever I drink it, it has the same affect on me as someone scratching their nails down a blackboard. The only one I have tried so far that doesn't affect me like that was Johnny Walker Black Label (I think that's right anyway). If i'm going to drink spirits though, I normally stick to vodka, although nowadays it's mainly lager or wine for me.

And, being a minor, I don't drink much more than a glass o' wine once and a while.
Though I do have to say thats good...

Talisker is my favourite Scotch that I drink regular , though the night before my brothers wedding we had two Quart bottles of Dimple that had been bought for him when he was born , very smooth
But you can't beat Poteen , as long as you know who made it as the bad stuff can seriously damage your health .

Thanks for the advice Tribesman, I may get a bottle of one of them for my Dad for Fathers day, and see if I can get him to offer me a drop, and if I like it, I may get some for myself. At least that way, if I am not to keen on it, it won't go to waste, not that I would really waste alcohol anyway.

Definitely has to be an island malt first choice, Lagavulin or maybe Bruichladdich if I can find any.

For something smoother I'd go for Cragganmore or maybe Glenturret
