I got to admit, I am interested to know the answer as well.
My guess is that it's only senior members who can post there, but anyone can view it.

Once you're a member you can. It makes it so that if people want to sign up just to argue on the Backroom, it can't happen. This is a Total War forum first, and everything else second.

We had a problem a couple of years back with gun control people coming here and ruining the forums because of the constant gun threads and abuse in the backroom. For this reason and others similar, it is for people who have shown that they are sensible and deserve membership status.
