    Post Online History Resources

    Information emergency?

TosaInu: Please visit https://forums.totalwar.org/?q=node/118 for the content.

Welcome to our on-line library, a tool for quick reference as well as in-depth research for players of TW games and mods.

    There are seven titles:
    1. General Resources
    2. Ancient
    3. Roman
    4. Sengoku Jidai
    5. Medieval
    6. Early Modern
    7. Napoleonic
There are subtitles for Nations and Empires if relevant to the games. Every (sub)title has headings for Background, Warfare, Maps and Primary Sources.

    Legend

Each link is accompanied by an indicator of the site's language(s) (colored orange), the name of the .org member who contributed it (in small print) and a summary description of content and host (in Italics).

Some links are marked superb because they are worth visiting in their own right.

Some links occur under several headings – that’s because they’re the best.

    Please help

This sticky is far from complete and I need your help. Please consider corrections and additions, or criticise the whole concept. Nit-pickers be my guest, I’m one of you. And please report any dead links.

Great idea. Thanks for volunteering Adrian.

Seriously, if you (or anyone else) post it, I'll sticky it. Your proposed organizational layout seems good to me. The only suggestion I'd have is to give credit to the patron who provided the link.

Seriously: thank youo, Gregoshi. I will gradually edit my proposal above, adding detail and incorporating patrons's suggestions for lay-out etcetera, until the whole thing looks acceptable to everybody. All input is welcome, of course.

    Exactly, m8 !!

It pains me, of course, to see the Kingdom of the Netherlands next to Snorri's Heimskringla and the Heiliges Roemisches Reich Theutscher Nation.

Seriously, I'll take a close look at all of it and try to sort it out according to period etcetera. Please bear with me (and have patience) because I'm going to need your help.

I suppose guys like Sigurd of Fafnesbane, Pindar, Hurin Rules, Aurelian and many others will have ideas and links to add. This might become a Frankenstein monster and we may have to shoot it... but after some pruning and the scaling back to generic links it might be manageable after all.

    Thanks again, Mouzafphaerre.

To clear possible misunderstanding in advance, this is a relevant segment from my bookmarks file. There are intersections with the Monastry but that's all. I also have a few hundred "unclassified" links.

Translation of the titles and subtitles will help I guess? [DONE ]

    Great, Mouzafphaerre.

I knew you were a great amateur of encyclopedic knowledge, and these bookmarks reflect the range of your curiosity and interests.

Please look at the tentative lay-out I have edited into my original post and tell me what you think of it. I feel that we should first (1) await the input of others, then (2) settle on a particular lay-out, and finally (3) get down to the nitty-gritty of the choice of links.

Timelines as a general guide is OK but too much subdivisions will, I'm afraid, fail when there are simply no detailed resouces OR the sources to be dealt with aren't specific to a certain subtitle.

As you probably have noticed, I prefer geography over chronology in my bookmarks but either way is OK to me.

    A very good idea indeed.
I'm going to post here every piece of info I found for the Diadochi Total War mod, as well as some other interesting things.

    General :
    Maps :

Historical Atlas by William R. Shepherd, on http://ancienthistory.about.com/ [already posted]

    Hellenistic World :
    Maps :

The Hellenistic Kingdoms from 303 BC to 145 BC

    General :

    Alexander's Successors : The Diadochi

The Diadochi : The World after the death of Alexander the Great 323 - 281 BC

An Online Sourcebook for the History, Numismatics, Epigraphy, Art and Archaeology of the Seleukid Empire

    Antigonus the Successor "Diadochoi"

    The Cimmerian Bosphorus

Numismatic from the Hellenistic Age, the Roman World and the Byzantine Empire

The House of Ptolemy, an aid in the study of the Ptolemaic (Macedonian-based Greek), Roman Imperial (Greco-Roman), and Byzantine rulers of Egypt based in Alexandria

    The Ptolemaic Dynasty, Wikipedia

    The Seleucid Empire, Wikipedia

    Lysimachus, Wikipedia

    Antigonus I Monophthalmus, Wikipedia

    Cassander, Wikipedia

    Warfare :

The Evolution of Hellenistic Infantry : the Reforms of Iphikrates and the Infantry of the Successors.

L’organisation militaire de la monarchie Séleucide (in French)

    The Diadochi Wars Timeframe

Edit : I noticed Mouzafphaerre already posted some of these links.
I don't know if all of them are valuable, but well, as far as possible, I tried to avoid links to Macedonian or Greek sites (mostly cause many of them are full of "Macedonians are greeks" and "Macedonians aren't greeks")

    Thank you very much, Meneldil!

Your links are particularly appreciated because I want to turn this into a tool for TW players and modders, with the emphasis on the periods and nations and their warfare covered by the game and its various mods.
Edit : I noticed Mouzafphaerre already posted some of these links.
I will try to deal with the problem of overlap, but the assistance of patrons in correcting my mistakes is very welcome.

I think we can not and should not shy away from controversy because that is part and parcel of historiography. Some conflictuous material will have to be included, but I trust we can deal with that.

    Thanks again!!

To save you some time, I'm going to put a sticky to links that have already been posted.

If you think biased and controversial work should be in, I'm going to post this kind of links aswell ;)

Btw, do we have to post english sites only ?

    Thanks, you are most helpful.

I'll continue working on it. I think we're beginning to see the skeleton of the animal, but I am not satisfied yet. We want all the bones in place before we can add the meat and skin and breathe life into it.

    Edit
As for the language, I think we should only include non-English links if they (1) contain unique information relevant to the TW games, and (2) they are not available in English at all.

So, no original Old French Froissart, because the Bibliotheque Nationale has made him available in English. But, say, a link to an original Norse chronicle with bearing on the TW games that has never been translated into English is definitely on.
    What do you think?

The lay-out feels good now, so I've started to cover more bases with links.

I'm scouring both the .org (I've been working the Hosted Mods forum today) and the WWW for links. I've asked some members by PM to look into certain areas to help me out. We'll get there somewhere this week, though I'll be fine-tuning it for a while and I'll keep an eye on it as long as I'm an active member of course.

You can stick it (pun unintentional) whenever you want, Gregoshi. I'll change the introductory text so it looks like a proper sticky. Would you care to change the name into, say, Virtual Library or On-line History Resource or sumpin'? I'm a bit of a stickler for decorum.

    Back to work now ..

Thanks, Lord Zimoa of Flanders! I had already copied the links you posted in the HTW, I browsed that entire forum yesterday. Those about Persia are already in the sticky with your name next to them as contributor.

Should you find anything TW-history-related on the Web in future, remember to keep us posted.

    Thanks again.

don't know if this is the kind of stuff that you're looking for..

    www.myarmoury.com
info on historic weapons and armor.
mostly a resource for collectors, with lots of reviews of replicas and such.
but it has cool feature articles too. examples:
    http://www.myarmoury.com/feature_seax.html
    http://www.myarmoury.com/feature_armies_burg.html

    another weaponry oriented site
    http://www.medievaltymes.com/courtya...wski_bible.htm
about the maciejowski bible, which is an illuminated old testament.
it is essentially a chronicle of 13th century arms.
    some example of the detail:
    http://www.medievaltymes.com/courtya..._images_10.htm
    http://www.medievaltymes.com/courtya.../otm10ra&b.gif
    http://www.medievaltymes.com/courtya...a&bdetail1.gif
now i'm here, and history is vindicated.
