    First, welcome the the Org!

Well, you did not give too much information: what era, how many provinces do you have, what is the general status of the play...

So... try to shuffle around troops, low loyalty troops go under the stack of a high loyalty general, prince or king. If unavoidable leave the low loyalty general alone in a province, you can always take back the province and kill the traitor in battle. Build troops where you can build loyal ones. Anyway, if there is a civil war - you can still win it.

    Thanks for the reply,

Im playing in the late era, all my troops are very loyal to the current sultan (Loyalty of 5 or more). At the moment im in a financial state of loss. But, Ive got the worlds largets army and Im currently defeating the french with ease. I have about 30 provinces to my name (about 14 were conquered during the current sultans reign).

Again the problem is that when the sultan dies, a civil war starts immediately. No matter who is the successor. The biggest problem is that the civil war takes away about 35% of my men and some very important border territories (like Rum where my Janissary production line is). This also means that the french and their evil chums (as well as any neutral borders) get agressive and another civil war begins as Im too weak to defend myself in some battles..

Well, are your provinces well garrisoned? Are there adequate amount of happiness buildings? Do you have muslim majority provinces? Are your provinces properly connected thru sea and land?

When the ruler dies the new ruler gets to be placed to the "capital" ie. one of the homeland territories (with the Turks it is Rum, I think). That means that suddenly some of the territories are far from the padisah and can rebel instantly. So try to withdraw your sultan slowly to your core territory and make sure that everyone is happy. Do you have screenshots? Savegame? Do you play vanilla or VI? Well, try some of this and good luck! :)

Come to mention it - the new sultan always seems to get crowned in France even though the last one was in Rum.

Anyways thanks for the help, will take your suggestions on board.

(plus I was thinking of killing off the disloyal generals bfeore they revolt).

Don't move your Sultan around, just keep him in one place. In your case, the best would be Constantinople. Then, try to control the sea provinces. You MUST have every single space.

Also, don't forget those religious agents, and spies (one of each per province). Use a lot of emissaries as well as a scout.

Or you could be historical and keep him in the true capital. Ankara, amazing that they dragged that huge cannon to Constantinople from there.

I almost always get 1-2 chan rebellions where huge swaths of land rebel, then my navy ships in elite troops from training centers and the front and I crush them with my iron boot, they don't rebel for a while after being mobbed by 5-10k of the best troops to ever walk the Earth. Remember to keep a strong navy, then you can easily respond to rebellions if you have a strong military.

I had this happen to me once; however, in my case the reason was clear. My ruler had no sons or brothers ready to succeed him; thus, no mature heirs in the "heirs" list. I had a number of generals who were of royal blood. Thus, one of them became the successor, but not everyone followed him, and civil war broke out.

Check your list of immediate heirs and see if you have any mature ones. If you don't, then when the ruler dies, his heir will be one of the generals who is a former heir, but was removed from the heirs list since he is not the present ruler's brother or son (he might be a great-uncle or something). In this situation, civil war will probably break out.

If this isn't your situation, then the problem will be something that someone else here already mentioned. Reasons for a drop in loyalty include:

    1. The new ruler is too far removed from many of his provinces.
    2. The new ruler has less influence; thus, his generals will immediately be less loyal to him.
    3. The new ruler lacks the former ruler's virtues that gave loyalty/happiness bonuses, such as builder and steward virtues.
    4. There may be an immediate, temporary drop in loyalty during the year that the new ruler assumes power.

You can counteract some of these effects by doing the following:

    1. Adjust taxes appropriately. This has a huge effect on the people's happiness.
    2. Assign governorships to individuals with high dread ratings. The people will respect these men more, and be more loyal.
    3. Make sure your entire empire is connected - use ships and ports if necessary. A break in the sea link between two separated parts of the empire will cause loyalty problems in at least one area, usually the one without the ruler.
    4. Immediately begin building stuff with your new ruler. He will soon have enough virtues to improve the people's happiness.

Does this mean building stuff in a province while the king is located there?

No; it doesn't matter where you build it, your ruler still gets credit for it. He doesn't even have to have initiated the building; he will get credit for it if it's completed during his rule. Because of this, rulers can get the builder/steward virtues much more quickly than governors and princes.

I'm not 100% sure but I think they pop up in your most developed province. As a sultan is dying in Asia minor and the new one is crowned (or whatever you do to sultans) in france, could it simply be that your new sultan is too far from some of your provinces?

Also if your old sultan had good builder virtues and lots of influence from conquering all over the shop then there will be a loyalty drop anyway when the new guy takes over, nothing you can do about that except weather it and carry on building and conquering.

*clears throat and prepares to give dissertation*

Here is how I manage happiness for fun and profit:

    1) I always use auto-tax, with the following change: set the default loyalty to 180% rather than 120%

    2) I maintain a garrison in every province consisting of the following:
    · 1 x 100 man spear unit
    · 1x 60 man sword/axe unit
    · 1 x 60 man missile unit
    · 1 x 20 or 40 man cavalry unit

    3) I always make my provincial governor one of the above-mentioned units

    4) I try to make sure the general I choose as governor has at least 4 acumen and at least 3 dread

    5) I keep the following strategic agents in every province:
    · 1 x Assassin
    · 2 x Spy
    · 1 x Religious agent (i.e. Bishop, Cardinal, Imam, etc…)

    6) Make sure every province has the following buildings, minimum:
    · Town watch
    · Church/Mosque
    · Tavern
    · Brothel
    · 80% farm upgrade
    · Highest Merchant upgrade possible
    · Port
    · Any Mines available
    · Border Forts

The result of this system is that any provinces you have held for at least 5 years will always be auto-taxed at the “very high” level, without ever having loyalty drop below 180%. Not only that, but the high level of garrison troops makes for a reserve force that can be temporarily mobilized to fight in other areas if needed. Think of them as a "National Guard."

This system maximizes revenue and stability. I have NEVER had a revolt or rebellion using this system, and always have ample supplies of cash lying around, once I hit the High period.

    Thanks for the replies guys,

I have actually managed to evade Civil war whgen my Sultan dies. Here how I did it

Firstly I cheated :(. I let civil war happen and got the name of the Rebel leader (This guy way important to me as he just got the field defence specialist virtue)

I then went back to an earlier save and tool away his army.

I then put him under the command of my heir.

This meant that he would retain some loyalty to my hier and as long as he was not commanding an army or in the same place for a long time the other disloyal generals would not know about his lack of loyalty as quickly which gives me enough time to put him under my sultans control once he is crowned.

Disloyal generals always look for a high command + dread general to start a civil war so try to keep these guys where u can reach them easily if your generals are disloyal.

I like having that type of rebellion it is fun!

BTW I almost never get rebellions that take away provinces, due to my navy and stockpiled armies awaiting movement or armies already on the coast that can sacrifice a few troops due to the advantage of defending. I usually do not have more than a one unit garrison in a province and only use religious units in areas like the Byzantine Empire and Rome. I like making the Pope's flock muslim.....

Goofball put a great summary there. However, I disagree with the garrison. Aside from the problem-provinces and the newly conquered ones. You only need to put a governor in a provinces. (Also, I manually set my tax).

I usually put a depleted unit with high acumen or dread (if the province is really poor in the game). I would say a unit with ~10 soldiers (preferably the cheap units too).

The key is not moving your leader EVER and controlling all the sea regions.

I think the most important concept other than domination of the landmasses is to dominate the sea and build a port everywhere you can. You can then move troops from Egypt to Ireland in one turn, very handy.

Shh! Ankara had never been a capital before 1923. The "huge cannon" was transported from Edrine (Hadrianpolis, pr. Edirne), the capital before Konstantinopolis. Before Edrine was Bursa (Prusas), occassionally -pr.- Eskişehir and in the times of the Saltanat of Rum Konya (Ikonion) and briefly İznik (Nikaia). Never Ankara! It's a modern invention.

Some kind of bug (or game-mecanism) makes the distance towards the king to the maximum when the king attacks something (and get a battle AFAIK). That got the same effect as your king trapped on Ireland with no port and that is mass rebellions. I think the bug is always active, but it's only relevant when your empire is large.

I once lost my English campaign because I didn't realize that I should never move my King once my empire got large.
I figured that medieval Kings went on crusades so naturally my King led one such crusade (I had launched others). Unfortunately it was an area without a port at the time.

My loyalty ratings were for the most part at 200% but when my King lost contact with a port it went down to 0% in some places...lol.

My whole empire revolted the next turn and since my King was part of a crusade he couldn't simply move back to a port area.

In conclusion, have your King sit in some nice slap of land with a port (and a good armourer). And have a fleet to support your massive empire of course.
