Thread: Taverns for Romans

This may be a newbie question but here goes... Some of my former barbarian towns have taverns in them. They give me a happiness bonus so I don't want to destroy them. Do they cause culture problems? Are they part of a building family?

They will give you a very small culture penalty. The culture penalty is a max of 50% to public order. If the government building isn't yours, that's a 20% penalty right there. The remaining penalty is 30%, modified by the ratio of your buildings to theirs. Thus, there will always be at least one building that's theirs, and so you might find a lingering 5% Culture penalty you can't get rid of. More telling to me is the drinking traits it will give your governors.

If you don't plan on leaving a governor in the town, you can probably leave a tavern up. Eventually you should tear it down, since the +5% happiness is cancelled out by the culture penalty for having the building in the first place. A bardic cirle gives you +10% happiness, that is probably worth keeping.

If you want to keep a governor in the town, the tavern increases the chance of getting the Drinking and Gambling traits. All of the gambling traits are bad. Social Drinker is not bad, but Likes a Drink, Drunkard, Drunken Lout, Paralytic, and Sot...

Don't forget the ancilliaries Dunken Uncle and Drinking Companion. It can get nasty in the extreme.

Now, this and the fact that it might give a culture penalty shouldn't make you destroy them right away. Check up on the settlement scroll to see how it works out, for some times you can keep a few buildings that aren't yours with no penalty. And in that case it is worth it.

I forgot about the ancilliaries. You could always go hardcore, leave the tavern, and build a temple to Bacchus. Good times, good times... Make a run for the coveted drink/feck/girls/arse traits combo!
