Step 2) Get an appropriate version of Vercingetorix's plugin for Max ( I know R5 and R6 are supported..other versions of Max might be as well )
Thats the bit you missed. You need Vercingetorix's CAS extractor. To find the download, look in the complete list of tools in the guides forum.

Dont you you mean pak extractor for the textures or idx for animation?

The PAK extractor will get the texture files out of the compressed archive, along with a full set of models. There are already ( if I rememebr rightly ) models outside of the pak. You can open them with the script file, but you won;t see them textured unless you extract the textures from the PAK file.

There is a good tutorial in the 'tools and tutorials' section on using the PAK extractor. It is a little tricky to use until you get used to it. It has to go in the right directory or it won't find the files :D

Get the script file for CAS import / export first, and get that to work. You should be able to get the CAs files in to look at the mesh that way.

when you run teh script, you should get some extra options in your 'utility' section of Max. One of which is 'import CAS'. This is a picture I pinched from Hoggy's tutorial on making new models. The 'utility' one is the icon shaped like a hammer....

You cannot import CAS files using the 'import' option...this is a script, not a plugin. Also, using 'open' will likewise give you grief.

If you are running the script from the dropdown option at the top of the screen, it will appear as if nothing has happened!

In fact... go immediately to Hoggy's thread, and read it right through. Pay particular attention to Post 21 from Maly Jacek. This shows exactly how to activate the script. Now..it's shown in Max, but I understand Gmax should have an identical layout. Never used GMax myself.... but I understand it is the same.
