    Default Weight Loss thread.

Some patrons in the backroom expressed an interest in a weight loss competition, so I'm starting this thread as a place to brainstrom, sign up, and to report progress once it gets going. I'll help out with the organisation. If there's enough interest, I'll sticky it.

Signing up. 5'9" and around 175 pounds. Exact morning weights ought to be recorded whenever this begins and updated every 3 days or so.

Who here is interested in team competition? Team USA/UK/Canada etc..

Please write down your preferred method of scoring, whether it be pounds lost, BMI, etc..

I'll go with plain old pounds lost.

You would diet and do cardio and lift weights to lose weight. Weightlifting helps because you'll add muscle, and muscle takes a lot of calories to maintain.

I'm 5'8" and about 85 kilos, I noticed BMI only changes slowly, so I'd say we should just use a pounds/kilos scoring system.

A friend of mine had an interesting theory about losing weight without getting tired. When you play sports, you lose weight because you burn up energy. When it´s cold, you also burn up energy. So if you just walk around in just a t-shirt when it´s very cold, you will lose weight. Dunno if it works though.

I've tried that, it isn't the miracle way to lose weigth, but I don't think it hurts either.

The best way to lose weight is by cycling.

I try to do 4 miles a day when I am on holiday/weekends. Last year I was doing 8 miles a day.

lb's are pounds, like cm is centimeters

    60 kilogram = 132.2773573 pound

    175 centimetres = 5.7414698 feet

so your 5"7 and 132 lb

The one best way to lose weight is through the diet - more protein, less carbs. Sports burn a pathetic amount of calories, drink a coke after a workout and you've regained all the lost calories.

That said working out is still good for the body and soul - it's just not the way to lose weight imho.

The worst thing to do on a diet is drink alcohol btw.
Nope - no sig what so ever.

An hour of rowing will burn 700 calories. You do that 5 days a week and you'll lose a pound...just don't drink a coke afterwards.

Dieting is less work though, but you to exercise as well.

If you row an hour each day for a week you DESERVE to loose a pound.

I consistently lost 3 pounds a week (each week for 8 weeks) by changing my diet, and I still ate until I was stuffed each day and played a lot of RTW... and no sports (heh can't spell exercise?!?!) above normal getting around.

Heh, that's great, but personal experience is a dangerous thing to make generalizations out of. I know people who've changed their diets, cut down on the amount they ate, and not lost any weight at all.

That's true, I did it with professional help (akin to weight-watchers but not the same) so that helped.

I really really dislike that signature by the way, it's creepy

Best of luck to you. Make sure you start tomorrow, as I've fallen into mental ruts before in this situation. I get this attitude of "Today is my last day as a free man" and binge heavily. I then repeat this the next day. Hopefully the publicness of this thread will add extra motivation for me.

Being hungry is really bad IMO. Whenever you get to the stage that you are hungry your metabolism has already slowed down considerably. You have to eat every 2 hours to keep the metabolism at top form.
Exercising burns a lot but walking also burns. If you just walk for 2 hours a day that's not bad. It keeps your muscle mass acceptable.
I'm strating dieting today too alsthough I'm wating till I'm 20 when I complitely change everything I eat and become an unberhumanbeing.

I think you can fool your metabolism about not slowing down by drinking a lot of water. Not certain about that though. I'm in. I'm 5'10" and 220 lbs. I want to get down to 175lbs (if that's humanly possible).

I've tried just diet (does well) and I tried just exercise (doesn't seem to do as much). I think the trick is a combination of both. I lost like 30 lbs with the Atkins diet, even without a lot of exercise, but I just cant' buy that eating greasy sausage is okay but that you need to watch how much brocoli you're taking in. I think this time I'm going to try South Beach. It's carb-restrictive as well (no sugar, very litttle grains) but it also forces you to take your protein from very lean sources (like fish, tofu & legumes) and also allows more vegtables. Even fruit is restricted though. I'll let you know how I do. If get really cranky in the next couple of weeks, that's because you cannot drink at all for 3 weeks, then it's small doses of red wine (1 glass/day) after that.
