Thread: Campaign Map

    Default Campaign Map

I have been reading up on people trying to create mods and they have problems with replacing the senate in their mods. It was my belief that u did not need to include the senate or even a faction remotly like the senate in ur mod as long as u used a different campaign map etc.in fact i thought u didnt even have to have roman factions. is this true or must the game have some form of a senate???

The game must include both the senate faction and the province of rome. Some people have worked around this by putting the senate surrounded by deep forest and things like that, but in theory they must exist.

bugger eh oh well im assuming u could rename it an make it so that it has no influence on the game. Ie i could make it so that they were named REBELS and then just have them as unplable factions on a remote island in the middle of nowhere with no way to build a port lol. Also with the camp map i was wondering about the map_regions.tga and map_heights.tga. how do these 2 interact and by this i mean wot r the colours in map_heights that change the heights. i understand that black is like desert and varying degrees of white r mountains but does anyone know the RGB colours

The game requires that the senate faction be present, however, all that is required of it is a single character. If it has no cities and starts at war with all of the Roman families, the Senate's single character immediately becomes a rebel general and the senate is out of the game.

Yes, but the province of rome must exist, even if not in senate control, as it is the objective of the game...

ok well thanx for all the help guys i will look into it and try to find a way to work around it. one other question about editing the camp map, in paintshop pro 7 in order to add new provices, i was using the paint brush tool to add. but the paint brush tool not only creates a small dot(for example with cities) but also changes the colour of the pixels around the one i am changing so i try to place a city with a one piexl dot and it changes that one pixel as well as the ones surrounding it, but not completly they are a combo of the 2 colours. why is this and is there a better way to create new provinces/cities/ports

Use the pencil tool. Look at here: https://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showthread.php?t=44169
With pencil tool you will modify only the pixel selected.

    Good luck.

thanx for the pencil tool hint it helped alot but now i have another question(lol im full of Q's today must have too much spare time) i have my own camp map edited but i keep getting an error message(when running with show_err) that tells me that my units i have placed are on invalid tiles. i cant just get rid of them because they r my generals and if i get rid of them the game wont run(no family members). i believe this has something to do with where my units r placed on the camp map at the start. but i dont know wot this is based on so please help!!! is it the x,y values in descr_strat.txt???

yep it's the x, y values in descr_strat. Basically what that error is saying is that some unit is placed on a tile that's impassable (e.g. mountain, river, sea, dense forest).

Yes it is the x,y values. I don't know with paintshop pro, but with photoshop the scale in the y axis was inverse to that used in the game. That is you need to know the height of the map_regions, lets say 156 pixels. These pixels are numbered from 0 to 155. Thus the y value in descr_strat must be 155-y', with y' being the value given in photoshop.
When I had this kind of error message I looked at descr_ground_types file. There the position is about 2x,2y and I looked if the position was in an invalid ground (mountain, dense forest). If not, perhaps the problem is a river or the coast. Try then to move one or two pixels the unit.
I hope this is of help to you.
    Cheers.

This kind of errors are difficult to solve.
In my experience they are due to problems with the "central" files of the game, for example descr_model_battle or export_descr_units.
I usually get an old version and I try to modify it in the same way but step by step.
Sorry, but I cannot be of more help.

hey well im caught on a bit of a snag u see i downloaded duke johns campaign template and got it up and running. i changed the map_regions.tga to the map i wanted run the game and it worked fine no errors. i then tried to change the regions cos in the template all the regions on are on a thin strip of land on the side of the map and the rest of the map is ocean an one other giant land mass. but when i moved a region to the giant land mass, moved the only unit to that land mass and kept the same RGB colours i get a settlement on invalid tile (0,0) error message and the campaign wont run. i cannot figure out why this is giving me an error like this so i reverted back to my backup copies of wot they were before and im still getting this same error please help.

also can someone tell me how to, in adobe photoshop 7, amke the edges of my land smooth. ie when i load the map(and it works) there are points on the side of some of the land masses. any ideas. cheers

p.s. i have deleted that one that gets generated every time (cant remember wot it is called and it still gets error???
