Default AI following a Siege thru to the end

As the Gauls, I watched the Romans build a fort just south of my city of Segesta. A few years later, my faction heir and a small army took over this fort and were in turn besieged there. I couldn't get help to them in time and the AI sat outside the fort until it fell. I tried redoing this a number of times, using the Siege bug, which I have experienced, in my favor. The AI did not lift the siege. After a number of saves and reloads to try this, I finally sent the army out to die honorably on the field of battle instead of inside the stinking fort.

If the AI intends to starve you out, the seige won't be lifted. But if they're building seige equipment for an assault on the walls, a reload will break the seige.

Ah! the Generals! they are numerous, but not good for much (especially if they're Languorous)!

What determines which option the AI will choose, any ideal?

I don't know the answer to that one. I know the AI takes its time about assaulting (I think it waits until the last turn before the settlement is starved out before it attacks, so it can take 2-3 years if you don't try to break the seige or load a saved game). I've seen it preparing for an assault against an army of about equivalent numbers. In this case, about half of my army was town watch, so the battle odds were in the AI's favor by 2:1. Perhaps it tries to starve you out if the odds are even or in favor of the defender. This would make sense, but that doesn't mean that's how it works.

Anyone have any facts to report or even more idle speculation?

I think I remember someone on the official forums saying something to that effect.
