Thread: Robin Hood and Merry archers

Default Robin Hood and Merry archers

The Viking Invasion expansion offers lots of new rebel types to aquire. The problem is getting them to turn up. I managed once to recruit a unit of english bandits in northumbria once but I have never seen them again in subsequent campaigns. Anyone know any tips on getting the right type of rebels in different places?

Just find out and remember where what type of rebels pop up where, then get that province to rebel repeatedly. Try and keep as many troops there as possible while still allowing it to go rebel to ensure a larger rebellion army, then bribe it and you get the sherwood foresters or berserkers or whatever.

I know for a fact that you can get Saxon Huscarles in your army if you send a crusade through England. They will just spawn, like other troops. Don;t know if it picks up sherwood foresters, but I think so.

I did not know about those "secret" units. I will have to try that out soon. I was not posting here when I was playing a lot of MTW, so I did not pick up on any of this earlier...

    If it helps:-

I kept getting them to emerge when I was harrassing the uber country (france) from Scotland when playing as the Russians. I think they only appear in mercia though. Not sure though.

I've modded the game so that you can use them, but rather than building you get them through crusader, other factions have their specialized units too now.

Sherwood Forresters only appear in Mercia.
I have had Saxon Huscarles in a crusade that I launched from Mercia that travelled into Wessex - picked them up in Wessex. They can appear in Northumbria, Mercia and Wessex.

How do they stack up to Hashishin any idea?
Hashishin are great fun to use. Seeing 12 guys unrealistically is fun, I never use them in campaign but every now and then maxing them out and having them take on an army is great fun.

When I was playing the Turks I used Hashishin and only Hashishin to take out the mediterranean islands !!! They killed many Rebels/Byzantines and I got many uber Jedi Generals with many stars and bada$$ virtues from them.

Well, the easiest way to compare sherwood foresters and hashishin would be to play them off each other 1 on 1 in a custom battle, like many have recently been experimenting with billmen and halberdiers. The biggest complication is the combination of range and melee. You could do a straight up ranged duel to compare archery abilities, but it'd be hard to evenly compare melee in the same way. You can instruct your guys not to fire but just to close with them, but they probably won't be entirely cooperative!

Sherwood foresters have longbows so they are superior in a ranged duel.

You could just put them on Engage at Will and turn Fire at Will off.

Exactly. How do you command your enemies to go to Engage at Will and turn off Fire at Will?

You need to test in a MP battle.

From a stats point it seems the foresters will win, since they use longbow VS sbow and have +2 charge while all other stats are equal.
