It depends on what region you are in. Carthage, Italy, Spain have dry weather for the most part. In anything north of the Pyrenees or the Alps, you will get rain/snow in every battle. It cycles about every 5 minutes...just like in MTW. The strange part about the rain is that it is hard to tell it is raining. The new engine doesn't do weather very well.

Personally, I believe that the effects for heavy rain should be the same as most MMORPGs (IE: EverQuest and Dark Age of Camelot), where a heavy "fog" obscures everything except for a radius small around you. That would be quite interesting to see if it could be implimented in the expansion...

I was just in Numidia (in the game) and had to fight through a pretty cool sandstorm. It looked pretty much like the real thing, and had most of the same effects (ie, reduced visibility and making a gritting sound when you walk).

Exactly. I've started a campaign as Germania and I'm constantly bombarbed with rain, t-storms, and snow. It's a nice change from the Med.

What is amusing about weather is that the carried over the same bizarre feature from MTW: the weather changes every 5 minutes or so, with little regard to what it was "forecasted" to be. You can actually detect the slight pause as the new weather loads.

Here's a really novel idea ...weight the weather change probability. In real life if it is raining cats and dogs, chances are that 5 minutes later it will still be doing the same. It is extremely rare that it is bright and sunny within 10 minutes... Or raining 5 minutes after having a clear blue sky. As time goes on the chance of weather changing could certainly increase.

It does tend to go in sequence: fair, light rain, heavy rain, then light rain, then fair, then light rain, repeat... Instead of cycling so easily there should be some sort of probability that the weather will change (better or worse.) Most times it would not change on the first pass, or even the 2nd or 3rd.

Statistics have shown that the most reliable weather forecast is that tomorrow's weather will be roughly the same as todays. Now cut that down to 5 minute or one hour increments and think about the most likely forecast.

Depends, afterall theres a saying in Scotland "If you don't like the weather, wait around for five minutes".

I'd love to fight some battles in heavy fog that was genuinely obscuring though, especially if the AI was as handicapped as the player, kind of like a Jutland-like complete mess of a battle

RTW weather simply sucks, either if it rains, snows or it is foggy, the sky is always blue and unclouded

I thought the weather in 1.2 is much improved?
Though it also includes ahistorical fossil fuel horizon haze...
maybe those guys should be doing something more useful...

Overall i think the weather system adopted by Rome is generally pretty good, especially the regional variations. What i miss however (mainly from Shogun) is the extreme heavy fog weather effects. I remember a battle where i only had one unit of warrior monks hidden in a treeline, while a whole army of Takeda troops marched around in circles looking for my single unit In the end they did find my small unit but alas, the timer ran out! Saved by the bell so to speak!

    Ahhh those were the days.

Absolutely agree - weather was spectacular in STW, got kind of dull in MTW (though winter fights still were a treat) and is completely dull in RTW. Maybe it has something to do with all the animations that have to run smoothly on the battlefield, dunno, (not a tekkie by any means) but it's a big loss... atmosphere just isn't the same anymore.

In 1.2 I got some rain in N Europe and some sandstorms in the East. The rain was simply some lines popping in and out on the desktop. Sandstorms were some blur rotating in close-up. Seemed to be there just to block your view, not to make the game more tense.

CA had stated on more than one occassion that the old weather effects just were not possible with the new engine. Storms and the like were impressive back in STW/MTW.

I've had some good fog in a couple of battles, but that was using the RTR mod. It's very dense, looks great and burns off about halfway through the battle.
