I have been working with 2 animators that have both helped me out with testing my theory on the animation cavalry AI bug.
I found that renaming etc doesnt work. My theory was using the fs_spearman base and add animations to this base and see if that worked.
Well it DID work and its a small fix but makes the world of difference with the way the AI fights battles. No more running back and forth like before, the engage and stay engaged.
There are 2 new animation files in this pack. there are named the following:
fs_fw_spearman
The first mentioned above has all the swordman animation put into the spearman animation base, this means you will see some over hand strikes. But I might add you wont see them as often as the swordman animation, I have no Idea why this happens but it must be related to using the spearman file. This Animation WILL NOT work for Cohorts that form turtle the game WILL CTD.
fs_sm_spearman
The second mentioned above has just 1 sword animation added to it, I looked and never noticed any overhand animation, but it wtill may be there. this one is important because it looks perfect for Roman Cohorts because its stabbing all the time.

P.S. I am sure this all can be improved upon by other modifications, but mroe important is this is a FIX for the AI behavior for infantry simulating cavalry AI.
