Default EB news - Friday, March 25

    Greetings Europa Barbarorum fans!

Since our announcement of the open beta last week, the forums have been buzzing! We still feel that April will see the beta arrive, but again all dates are subject to change. Some of you prefer to look at pretty pictures than to read news about EB, and we know that last week was a bit of a disappointment for you. So this week we have several different things to feast your eyes upon.

Prometheus has been working on the republican Roman units. What you see below is a WIP of the early, Camillan Triarii. The Triarii were the third rank of the republican legion, called to battle if the attacks of the Hastati and Principes faltered. These early Triarii still fought in phalanx, and carried the full greek panoply. The spear length will be shortened from what you see below.

Aymar de Bois Mauri has been hard at work on the Iberian units. Here you see the Carthaginian, Iberian, and rebel Scutarii. The Scutarii are the rank and file heavy infantry of both Carthage and the Iberian tribes. They are armed with spears and two solifera. They wear good quality leather armor with a bronze disc (in the Gallic style) protecting their chest.

Here you see the Macedonian and Seleucid Hypaspistai, by Agart. Hypaspistai are the elite spearmen of the Macedonian and Seleucid armies. They are versatile and elite soldiers, often forming the right wing of the Hellenic battle line. Their heavy armor and weapons allows them to fight as elite spearmen or swordsmen, and they are able to fight the hardiest opponents.

Finally, Alin and Storm of Horus have been hard at work on new animations. Here you can see some examples of two-handed pike animations under development by Alin.

Please note that unless stated otherwise, ALL pictures shown in our news posts are of works in progress. We continue to improve on all parts of EB, and will do so long after our initial release.

As always, if you have questions or comments, the best place to post them would be here:

We give special thanks to http://www.imageshack.us who provide us with a simple, foolproof, and free way to show you all these pictures each week.

    Have a wonderful day!

    Sincerely,

    -the EB team

Great work on the Hypaspistai guys. Looks fantastic. A minor complaint: You guys should add shoulde straps for the shields. Other then taht it's perfect.

Download these codecs, and use bsplayer or quicktime.

I recommend mplayer classic , it usually plays even the weirdest things, including various quicktime formats (if you have proper codecs, of course)
    I'm still not here

Great job again, guys! Those units look fabulous. Esp. hypaspistai. However I was wondering what is the 2nd animation(that with an overhand cav. spear) meant to be.

Great work as always. Especially the hypaspistai are simply perfect. Only one thing i would like to say about Triarii knowing offcourse that they are not finished yet. The face seems kinda blury and the shield seems to distort when in percpective angle. Also the shield device maybe it would be better to be recreated as graphic, cause from what i understand this one is taken from photograph, so that the figure will have an oveall same quality and realism amount. Its just too much contrast between a very detailed photo quality device and a not so detailed graphic face. Im just saying my opinion as graphic designer. Its matter of balance, we dont want the device steal the show do we? . Everything else is just perfect and i look forward to get my hands on the completed mod which im sure will be educational and fun.

    wow, thats too great!
what will the spearlength be for hypaspistai and triarii? short_pike, normal, or long_pike ( like in export_descr_unit, or in meters)?

I thought triarrii didn't fight in phalanx, since rome abbondonned it, will this be reflected? will it become useless to use the roman phalanx after some time ( before marius)?

ok, I got a question. the shield on the pikemen animation looks about as big as the regular hoplite-shield in vanilla. how big will hoplite shields be? chin to knee?

Well it is the shield from vanilla i didn't have any units made by EB members but from what i've seen it's about the same size but i may be wrong with all the screens i've seen.
Also these aren't hoplites they are pikemen, hoplites will use the underhand animation from vannila but maybe we will change it so that it looks more realistical,we'll have to see this.

    what? I don't follow.

the animation of teh pikemen walking has a hoplite shield ( hoplite in rtw). so teh question is: is this premature, like the spear of the triarius? or will it staythis big?
if they stay this big, how big will hoplite shields be? IMO the pikemen shield should be a tad smaller than in the animation and teh hoplon should be much bigger than in rtw.

Animations are not really dependent on equipment. He's working on the animation separately from our modelling work. The unit he is working on, aside from the sarissa, will be nothing like the units in game.

I don't think they were really pikemen...

nice but hypastai weren't really pikemen, but rather flexible spear armed soldiers that could also fight with sword. btw is the pikemen animation a fighting style, or is it just the skin

I don't know if this is just the animation of the Macedonian Pikeman contains a broken pike. Look at the Pike portion between his hands. It's all black. Is that really necessary?
