    Default uhm a lil help?

Hi all, i'm new to this forum and i'm a lil bit stuck on RTW. Well firstly i'm not too sure if i've posted this in the right forum ( sorry if i havn't ). Well my problem is this: i've started a campaign and i'm the blues - sorry i've forgotten the factions name ;) - anyway i've got about 3/4 cities but i've ran into a problem. One of the cities is earning -400 denari, i've tried building roads, traders etc but it won't go up! The cities population arn't very happy and it's extremeley hard to get anywhere with it. Any ideas?

    Thanks

PS. What does "sqalor" mean lol?

oh also, i've put the teax down to low, because the population starts getting v. angry, and i've read a few guides, but i find it kind of confusing.

    Hi Rick,

A negative income doesn't mean you automatically lose money! The costs are simply distributed over the settlements proportional to their population.

I would suggest you read my RTW Guide (see my signature below and click the link). Scroll down to the Economics section. It explains it all right there.

If you have read it already and still confused, here's an example

    You have two cities:

    City A earns 500 denari (Population = 500 people)
    City B earns 2000 denari (Population = 500 people)

The cost is 1200 denari. The computer divides the cost between the two settlements. Each will pay 50% of the cost (-600 denari).

    City A will show (500 d - 600 d =) -100 d outside your settlement.
    City B will show (2000 d - 600 d =) 1400 d outside your settlement.

It doesn't mean you are losing money. You are actually taking in 1400 d- 100 d = 1300 per turn!!

In your case you have -400 denari instead of -100 d showing.

if you have more questions, ask away.

Squalor is simply a public order penalty based on population. Read the guide first (look up public order), then ask again what you don't understand.

Ahhh thanks alot, so even though i've got 3 cities earning roughly, 200-800 each and one earning -300 it will be fine?

Yes, if your other cities are making enough positive incomes to offset the cities with negative incomes then you're fine mate.

Yep, simple summation for that... Note, that's income before construction/recruiting etc. though.

If you want to make more money you have to expand. Capture more cities, then you have more places making money. But to capture cities, you need to spend lots of money on making and mantaining armies, which you need to capture cities to make the money.

It's a vicious circle. Lose money to make money.

I have no problem with money whatsoever. I have a vast treasury of 2,000,000 denarii and I make 50,000 denarii per turn. Public Order is my problem!

You're obviously quite late in the game, and I find that if I concquor cities that have large population, unless I slaughter the inhabitants (3rd option), they NEVER become happy regardles what I do (the tankless b****rds who would not recognise civilisation if it hit them over the head).

Put them to the sword... the lot of them.

Hmm Carthage is not earning much, alot of my cities arn't earning much. Also the public order isn't great. I don't know what do build, in some of my citys i've got high levels of sqalor but there's no buildings to reduce it!

Squalor is the main problem in my game, I'm sorry mate, I don't know the cure.

If you don't know what to build, ask the advisor.. She has some alright ideas.

Honestly there isn't a whole lot you can do to fight squalor other than building all the public health buildings and governors mansions. Most people use some sort of mod to lower the squalor problems. I usually edit my export_desc_buildings.txt file and increase the health benefits of the health buildings a little.

Also, don't worry if some of your cities don't appear to be making money. All you need to worry about is if you are generally making money empire wide. The trick is to make only a few cities, unit producing cities and all of the rest, money making cities. It's easier said than done, but you get the idea.

Personally, I think the happiness and rebels take way too much effort and lower the fun value. I would much rather be fighting full stacks of armies than making sure my cities have sewers! Anyway, I personally enslave like mad. I don't like the idea of exterminating the population. It's not too much fun. That should help you with the happiness problem. I also destroy a lot of the buildings that I won't need in that city to help lower the cultural penalty. Along the same lines, if you can do it, try and build buildings in that city that upgrade old ones that are not of your culture.

Darned Egypt. That is why I can't play them for long. They get so big I can't manage them, and lets be honest, retaking is kind of painful!

    I'm playing Egypt on medium/medium.

I get cities rioting, but none have rebelled. It seem if the garrison is big enough they'll riot for a few turns, which reduces the population enough to get things back under control. Then try to crank up taxes to stop the city growing and get enough of the happiness buildings built to mainatin the ataus quo. It's a bit of a blancing act.

However as Egypt there are some places that I just can't get down to zero population growth.
