    Default Validus Romanorum Release - Alemanni

    Welcome to the first Validus Romanorum Release. This is a mod for BI, and its aim is to make gameplay more historically accurate. The mod will include complete re-do's for all factions, as well as a new map (see the Fall of the Empire map thread in the Forge), and will have unit cards and descriptions etc, and hopefully also some new animations and features. This is the first release for the mod, so, I hope you like it!

    Alemanni:

    Klieggruppe:

    These are the standard tribesmen, mere farmers called up to war. Despite their lack of training and arms, they are decent soldiers thanks to their tough lifestyle. These men are poorly disciplined, and will not hesitate to flee if the battle is not going their way.

    Stange Solduri:

    These men come from the lower levels of barbarian society. They have some basic training, but apart from their large shields they have no protection in battle. These men have a lot to prove, so they can be impetuous, although their lack of experience means they can flee just as willingly as they charge!

    Schwerstange Solduri:

    These men were once in the ranks of the Stange Solduri, but have improved their status through several battles. They are well disciplined, and wear a helmet and breastplate for protection. They also have a large shield, making them strong defensive units.

    Klinge Solduri:

    These are respected men in barbarian society. They are courageous warriors, although somewhat ill-disciplined. They wield great swords, and carry a medium-sized shield. Thier only armour is, however, only a small breastplate.

    Hinterhalt Solduri:

    These men come mostly from woodland areas, and are expert hunters. They are superb ambushers, and can hide almost anywhere. They are primarily shock troops, as they have a disturbing appearance, and their axes and strong charge make them a great offensive unit.

    Machtigmanner:

    These are men of great physical size and strenght. They wield their double-handed axes with incredible and power, making them truly fearsome opponents. These men are lightly armoured, although they care little for their personal safety when the rage of battle takes them!

    Suebi Geistekrank:

    These men are truly fearless and insane. Fear means nothing to them. They charge blindly at any foes and any number of them, caring less about thier own safety than how many enemy heads they can take. These men strike fear into the hearts of enemies, and can endure combat for long periods of time thanks to their physical strenght.

    Werfende Stange:

    These are the younger warriors from the barbarian tribes. Their purpose is not mainly to fight in melee, but rather to harass slower enemies and support their fellow warriors with hails of javelins from behind. These men are, however, untrained and often flee when in trouble.

    Bogenschutzen:

    These men are skilled hunters, and have become expert in using the bow and arrow, as it is necessary to put food on their plates. These men can only expect to inflict light casualties except against the weakest of opponents, although a lifetime spent hunting has made them good ambushers.

    Gewahlt Bogenschutzen:

    These men are selected from the ranks of the Bogenschutzen. They are the elite archers, and as a reward are given more powerful bows, as well as a breastplate and small golden band to protect them in battle. These warriors are still, however, best kept out of melee combat.

    Helle Reiter:

    These are light horsemen. They have a powerful charge, but are best kept out of prolonged melee combat due to their lack of armour. These horsemen are best for chasing down fleeing enemies or harassing opponents.

    Schnelle Reiter:

    These horsemen are excellent for harassing enemies with their javelins. They are extremely quick on the battlefield, and can run rings round enemy infantry while peppering them with javelins. These horsemen should, however, be kept out of melee combat, and are extremely vulnerable to enemy missiles.

    Thanks for the feedback everyone.

    But I think it will be a while before there is another release, I'm in the process of learning how to model, and it looks like its going to take me a while to get the hang of it.

    BTW, that would be great HahnHolio if you could translate the names to German. Here they are:

    Warband
    Spearmen
    Heavy Spearmen
    Swordsmen
    Ambushers
    Great Men
    Berserkers
    Young Warriors
    Archers
    Chosen Archers
    Medium Cavalry
    Light Cavalry

    Thanks for your help!

    sure thing RTWKing, glad to help ...

    Warband -> Leichte Infantrie
    Spearmen -> Speertraeger (should be Speerträger but i don´t know if the characters are supported)
    Heavy Spearmen -> Schwere Speerträger
    Swordsmen -> Schwertkämpfer
    Ambushers -> Späher
    Great Men -> Zweihandaxtkrieger
    Berserkers -> Berserker (without the ´s´)
    Young Warriors -> Junge Krieger
    Archers -> Bogenschützen (replace ü with ue if not supported)
    Chosen Archers -> Meisterbogenschützen
    Medium Cavalry -> 'Reiter' or 'Kavallerie'
    Light Cavalry -> either 'leichte Reiterei' or 'leichte Kavallerie'

    i hope this is usable ... as alwayz replacing ÜÄÖ with ue,ae or oe if u need to.

    No offense, but the unit names should not be in german. If anything, they should be in Icelandic (that's the language most resembling old germanian). If you can get ahold of an icelandic person to translate them for you, that'd be great!

    Neither Norwiegan, Swedish, Danish or German sounds anything like old germanian, even though they all derived from it. Icelandic, however, is pretty close.

    EDIT: Whoops, forgot all about the units. They are excellent! I like the way you made them more realistic, and still kept the faction colors. Most mods go for all out realism, and you end up with every barbarian army wearing nothing but brown pelts. It gets really tiresome.

    Is this a release in the sense that it's available for download? If so, where?

    I agree with EvilNed but Iceland has a Nordic language so that would be far from truth to. Plus all of the tribes of Germanian people didnt speak the same language. For instance English is the language of the Saxons but if you were to go back in time you wouldnt understand a word. As english has now been infulenced greatly by French, Latin and the Celtic languages making it a Latin-Germanic-Celtic language how original are we. Since Germany isnt really German in a sense its French exept French are German, but when the French conqured the German states its greatly effected the german language. The Germans being still pagan moved into Prussia. So if you can get your hands on old old English and Prussian you would have similar languages. So i agree dont use modern German unless you cant find anything else. Or use Iclandic if nothing Else

    P.S. Havoc in old english means to have a hawk. Just a little example of how much it has changed think the only thing we kept was the word a :P

    I think they look great! But you might mant to put some shirts on them since they look way to Celtic. Im not saying to use the traditional brown pelt,(thought i wouldint mind that)try going for some lightish-grey wolf skin colered plets. :)

    nice
    The Wheel of Time turns and Ages come and go, leaving memories that become legend. Legend fades to myth,
    and even myth is long forgotten when the Age that gave it birth returns again. In the Third Age, an Age of
    Prophecy, the World and Time themselves hang in the balance. What was, what will be, and what is, may yet
    fall under the Shadow

    Twice and twice shall he be marked,
    Twice to live, and twice to die.
    Once the heron, to set his path.
    Twice the heron, to name him true.
    Once the dragon, for remembrance lost.
    Twice the dragon, for the price he must pay.

    Well ... due to popular demand, i´ll give it a try to go for early gothic translation of the troopnames ... found a comprehensive dictionary of the gothic language from about 400 a.d.
    i give it a shot now ... plz stay tuned for the results to come within the day ...

    hm... i actually have no time to learn the whole language, so i´m skipping this.
    there is no comprehensive dictionary on any old languages out there which would be useful for the germanic tribes.
    sorry, but i think it was a good idea ...but im too lame for dis. :)
