Indeed, what is the alternative. Civ 3? Galactic Civilizations? Warcraft? Please...
The fact that there are 3 TV shows around the world who use the TW engine to provide entertainment to their audiences should say enough: Rome Total War is a beautiful game.
Sure, it's pacing is not like MTW. Sure the AI has a hard time.
But newbies like my friends dont even notice this, and rate it as a top game. Besides the occasional 'lets all go for the river' order, of course...

I do not the current state of R:TW, but I cannot abandon it yet, I hope that my posts will influence CA, and I want others to avoid the mistake of buying R:TW.

We need MP games without the oversimplifications required for 'good' AI.
I hesitated between "I do not the current state of R:TW, but I cannot abandon it yet." and the enthousiastic first option...
As this game gave me enough hours of (mindless?) fun since I purchased it in October, I just choose the first option.
But the game can ALWAYS be improved. In many ways.
i voted rome 3rd in my pc gamer games of the year awards, i always hang about the communities of games i have/play,
