The SPQR mod had done this: they have a new unit called 'sword hoplites' which are simply hoplites without the spears. Perhaps you should go ask lt0924760925.

I think the spartans should be normal spearmen with sword as secondary weapon, good against infantry and cavalry.
I would be very happy if someone fancied make some.
