Org getting a bit hostile?

Well done also, you've defended it, and in doing have proved that you are not open to outside opinons, so it's just as well that only 'members' can go there really...

While I would be inclined to tout the many obvious virtues of "wicked watermelon" flavored Squishies, I fear that my exhortations would fall upon deaf ears, as it is readily apparent that some among us believe "sour grape" to be the finest of syrupy sweeteners of slushy drinks...

The aptly named 'backroom' appears to be the "ill informed political speculation" forum? I've no desire to ever post there or become involved with the rubbishy topics, and I don't think I have the permissions anyway? (damn what a loss!


Very little posted there is accurate and all I have read so far is extremely biased political views interlaced with endorsements to "invade county x" and "bomb country y". No solutions there...

People in this forum seem to have a habit of jumping on other peoples every word.

i agree with you to some extent

the Backroom should be renamed to "politics and religion" or something like that because that's all that ever gets talked about there. you hardly ever see anyone making a non-political thread in there, or a non-religious thread in there. hence, might as well call a spade a spade and rename the Backroom forum to something that describes it more accurately

now where i disagree:


you say "all I have read so far is extremely biased political views ". well - that statement applies to everyone in the entire Universe. every human being is biased and will reflect those biases during any form of communication. heck, even language itself is biased. there are not even any "unbiased" words that can be chosen to describe most things. bias exists everywhere in life. there's no getting around it or avoiding it. it's a part of the human condition. to expect "solutions" to come from discussions of heated issues is not realistic. everyone knows that no unanimous consensus will be forthcoming, but it is still good to "fight the good fight" nonetheless.

as for the "People in this forum seem to have a habit of jumping on other peoples every word" - that is the nature of quality discussion. if one's words can stand up to scrutiny, then the act of them being jumped on should cause no offense. if one's words can not stand up to scrutiny, then is it not fair to criticsize those words?

Backroom isn't getting more hostile. It's the same thing as always there: usual suspects jump on each other's throats only to kiss and make up later, and the rest of the posts get ignored unless they are really aimed to stir up trouble. It's been like that for as long as I've been visiting it before, and it's the same now when I visited there again after a long leave. So, nothing to worry about, at least in terms of something being novel there.

hrvojej thats one of the best summaries I've read here - pretty much sums it up.

Recently I've been spending time in the Backroom and (*feigns shocked look*) it seems like most of the people who appreciated my comments already had the same opinion, whilst most of those who felt differently than I before I posted seemed to make no change in position or temperament after reading my pearls of wisdom. But they do seem to enjoy quoting me and pointing out perceived errors in my thought process.

Imagine that.

There is a group of folks who care not what opinion you have, but only on how well you can support or defend it. TBH the folks who seem to like to debate for the sake of displaying/improving their debating skills seem to me to be the most interesting people in the Backroom, and the ones who actually seem to be getting something out of the discussion (other than that most base reason, to vent one's spleen).

doc bean is right, the Backroom provides a place for all the heated dicussions and prolly keeps the temp down throughout the rest of the Org.

My advice, if you don't like it don't go visit, there's plenty of other stuff to do in the other forums, like complain about Rome
