Default First Post -- Why can't I save during Prologue?

Hi everyone, I just started started playing RTW this weekend (with Patch 1.2) and the tutorial mode in Prologue is great and I've enjoyed my first few battles, but I don't seem to be able to save my game. When I hit the Esc key during the campaign screen the Save and Load buttons are grayed out.

The manual says virtually nothing about when you can save your game, and I'm not sure if I'm dealing with a bug or if I'm not doing something right. I've already beaten Gauls in the first engagement, captured the first town on the campaign map, and now I'm about to begin an attack on the next town, but I haven't been able to save yet. Otherwise I'm really loving the game so far, so please help me out.

Press Escape and then there will be a bunch of options, go down to save game and click it. Then you should be able to save it..
RTW doesn't have save points if that's what you are thinking?
    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the quick reply, but when I hit escape, the Save and Load buttons are grayed out. Any idea why?

Yes. I tihnk I know. Before you can save you have to progress far enough in the prologue, I tihnk you have to take the Rebel settlement and you have to blockade a port. I would do some senate missions, have some battles and eventually you should be able to save. When you can save it, save the game and then you can quit. After this you can do a proper imperial campaign with the other Roman factions.. Good Luck!

I think the autosave feature works for the prologue.

Thanks, Craterus. The prologue battles I've done so far have been pretty time consuming since I'm new to all of this (what with flipping through the manual and all...) and it seems like I'm going to have to put in several hours of gameplay before it lets me save. I actually left my PC running last night so I wouldn't lose what I've accomplished so far.

Can anyone tell me more about autosave? Also, are there points during gameplay when you can and cannot save, or can you save anytime?

Whenever you press end turn, the game will autosave.. I think this is a brilliant feature because my computer sometimes blacks out while I'm playing RTW.. so when I re-load RTW and "continue campaign" I won't have lost too much work..

Anyway, hope I helped, Happy Gaming!!

Just a little update: I believe it was somewhere after my third battle in the Prologue that the save option finally became available from the ESC key menu. It's my one criticism of the game so far. Since I'm totally new to RTS games, it took me a couple of hours of playing to reach the point where I can save, and along the way I made some dumb moves, got some good units wiped out, and even lost some officers because I accidentally sent them out of a settlement alone where they were then engaged in battle and defeated. All dumb beginner moves that I couldn't recover from because I couldn't save yet.

Anyway, I now have two senate missions, to blockade a port and to put down a rebellion in Tarenton. Thing is, my army is kind of depleted...I went into Tarenton with a force of 273 men against defenders numbering 81. Then 500 Greek reinforcments showed up and that was it for me. Which leads to the question, would it be wise for me to ignore the rebellion and the port blockade missions right now, and just spend some turns recruiting units and building up my army? Are there any repercussions if I just ignore those senate missions for now and let the 'turn limit' on those missions expire while I rebuild my forces?

Repair and rebuild your army, only attempt to do senate missions when you are sure you have a good chance of succeeding..

    Once again, Good Luck

    Lucky,

I guess the lesson of the prologue is: you have to pay for your mistakes. That may be the reason that you cannot reload at the beginning.

Fulfill the demands of the senate if it is favourable, if not ignore it.

    The consequences are not severe:
    you don't get the award
senate doesn't like you very much
and if you do this to often you can get financial punishment.

By the way, I am sure you can read this in froggy's guide.

So don't care too much about the senate. If they hate you go to Rome and kill them. Who needs the senate??

Thanks to you both. I did skim over Froggy's guide a few days ago, but I was eager to start the game, plus I really think I needed to play a bit to get some experience in order to have some context for what the guide is talking about. I'll go give it a closer read now.
