yeah , that pretty much say's it all,

one of the best cost effective ( although expensive ) units in the game

The charge has been found to be heavily dependent on armour level...so that results in inordinate amounts of damage by any armoured cav, particularly cataphracts.

Hah, they're much better than any other HA. Cataphract archers are better than most heavy cavalry when it comes down to it. I let them skirmish away, but if the Romans come after them with Legionary Cav, I just turn off skirmish and do a 180 and charge them head on. The end result? Lots of Roman dog food! Cat archers are the best 4 legged unit in the game IMHO.

Yep, that's why I always play Armenians when I want a really FUN custom battle!

Cat Archers are best HA in the game.. IMO.

As Red Harvest mentioned the charge is very dependant on the armourlevel of the unit. Thus have the cataphract archers become one of the most powerful chargers in the game after real cataphracts and their camel counterparts. Coupled with their too fast speed, bows and skirmish ability makes tem effectively the most powerful unit in the game. Expensive yes, but much too cheap for this. But personally I find them overpowered regardless, no price can make up for them.

The CA are pretty much unstoppable once you upgrade their armour. In my current Armenian campaign I am using them even against heavy Roman cavalry. I just leave them on skirmish for while and then when they get cornered at the edge of the map I just turn the skirmish mode off and charge the romans. I suffer some casualties but victory is certain.

My army is made almost entirely of CA and I control all of asia minor, the middle east and North Africa up till carthage.
