Star trekking, across the universe, on the starship enterprise, under captain kirk
Star trekking, across the universe, only going back because the gear's stuck in reverse.

Star trek gets my vote, especially voyager, or the next gen.

Star Trek and New Gen are my faves. I like Star Wars too, but not nearly as much as Star Trek.

Good to see the org discussing the really important things, instead of the usual fluff in the backroom. I guess Star Trek vs Star Wars is rather like Roundheads vs Cavaliers in the English Civil War - right but repulsive versus wrong but romantic.

On the one hand, with Star Trek, you have over a hundred hours of consistently good entertainment, occasionally brilliantly plotted and written. Large ensemble casts including many fine character actors. A fairly convincing universe and history, which has even developed its own language. Clearly the right and sensible choice, but with lead characters played by a balding Shakespearean actor or depicted a bossy school marm, a choice which might seem rather dull.

On the other hand, with Star Wars, you have just over two hours of fine work with the Empire Strikes Back but then ten hours of George Lucas's hokum complete with inane dialogue, absurd combat, cardboard characters, ludicrous plots, virgin births, etc. Clearly the wrong choice, but with memorable characters like Yoda, Han Solo and Darth Vader, one which the more romantic and flighty might select.

Wow, SA is on the money there.

BUT, what I want to know is, where are the bad people in Star Trek? Everyone is nice and smiley and helpful and brave, and they all live in a utopia with no private property, or so it seems.

Which is impossible so I reckon there has to be some serious eugenics and oppression of the "different" going on, just we don't get shown it. Humans just CANT be that conformist.

Besides, Star Wars has Han Solo.

    Wrong but Romantic then.

My heart says "Star Wars" (nostalgic childhood memories) and my head says "Star Trek" (especially the exceptionally good DS9).

So I voted "GAH!" in the poll for trying to make me choose between the two

Star Wars all the way. And I'll even tell you why.
Have you seen the Star Trek uniforms? Thats just not right....
On the other hand, despite SW not being a particularly brilliant example of script, but it has the Force. What can Star Trek offer that even is comparable....

Star Wars has lightsabers. Lightsabers. It therefore wins.

You know you're a Star Wars geek when the fact that you never can be a Jedi Knight really depresses you...

it depends what you value more in your entertainment

if you value strong plot, deep philosophical questions being explored as they relate to the nature of humanity and existence itself, good to great acting, along with very unbelievably hokey "action sequences" that all look totally fake - then Star Trek is where you'll get that

if you value weak plot, dumbed-down philosophical questions that boil everything in the universe down to "good" or "bad", shallow entertainment with bad to mediocre acting, along with great action sequences that are totally mesmerizing, then Star Wars is where you'll get that

i prefer the deeper substance and better acting that Star Trek has to offer.

star wars. though i love the first two star trek series, nothing can ever dislodge star wars from the premier position in my heart of hearts. yes i know parts of it are extremely bad, all right most of it except for the effects are pretty bad. and i know i will have a strong urge to kick george lucas in the nether regions after i see the upcoming movie because it will not be the masterpiece i long for it to be. but hey its star wars.

the follow up question. should be star destroyer vs starship who wins?

This site deals with the question of who would win a match-up between the Federation and the Empire. Its geek quotient is truly off the scale.

    I love it.

that has already been discussed all over the net. the general consensus is in line with all the info on this site

for the clicking-impaired, the bottom line is:

    Conclusions
In a straight-up fight, the Empire squashes the Federation like a bug. Even with its numerical advantage removed, the Empire would still squash the Federation like a bug. Accept it.
i like Star Trek better than Star Wars and even i must agree with that conclusion
