Oh yes, I have a bit problem creating a preloader with % status. I tried to check if a frame is loaded, and if yes to place a n%, then proceed to check for another frame-load which will remove the n% and replace with (n+10)%. Somehow, the preloader doesnt work in the way I hope it to. Do you have a sample/template of a preloader with such feature that I can reference?

tootee, i recently learnt flash 5 myself to create a intro for the kenchi site (not uploaded yet) and i can only agree with cape here in that the forum and the tutorials at www.flashkit.com are really good there are tutorials for virtually anything and the forums get great responses amazingly fast too! just waiting for your site to load

yes i think swish creates monster every time. I think the swi file is almost x2 the sum of all my jpg and mp3 files used in the movie. Will flash mx be able to create more compact swi?

flash makes .fla file and swish .swi both export to .swf files but not sure which is better at compression but my money is on mx by a mile
you shold try using .png imo, i heard flash really likes em

mx will have many new features that will help alot.... but to fix problem now...

the %loaded thing is likly a tell target... you must use the system of /'s and .'s to tell it wich sprite or level to look to. some of the pre made loaders use java in a seperate file to query the file size... if that file is named wrong or not included then it wont work. personaly i think simple is better... the first scene use a few if frame than goto next frame commands...

swish is bad about file size... its partly what makes flash 5 so much better. however there are a few things u can do to drasticly drop file size
1)change all sound to mono.. you will need outside sound editor ... many free ones on cnet or other places. this will reduce sound file to half the size.
2)swish almost ignores outside jpeg compression... even if you have reduced the quality of photo and hence file size in outside image editor.... swish undoes it and puts it to a high to medium quality.... you can fix this by going and reducing the image quality to 10-25% (in swish) and graphics will be reduced on average 30%
3)goto export options and make sure you are not animating objects outside the frame.

do your reserch!! periodicly check the file size report...found in test movie.... u can save a lot of space if you know what using what.... i cant tell you how many times ive found 1 frame of 500 frame movie uncompressed.... that 1 frame was the size of 200 others...

dived file size by 5 for 56k modem

a 50k file will take 10 seconds
a 500k file will take 1 minute 30 seconds
1mb will take 3 minutes

divide file size by 250 for cable/dsl

500k file takes 2 seconds
10mb takes 40 seconds

Thanks. Went back to swi and set recompress jpg to 70%. The swf is small by about 10%.

But I must say, Swish is really a simple tool to make flash. When I read about mx and the actionscripts, I tell myself "what! not another language.. and for animations?" blah I think I know more computer languages than human ones MX is just overwhelming for a simple guy like me
