    PC games:

    1. STW: number one overall and still unbeaten.

    2. Operation Flashpoint: I like the open environment, moddability and easy to use mission editor (which keep the game alive).

    3. MTW: good game despite of a few things that I didn't like.

    4. Romance of the Three Kindoms (3): my first PC game and I like that time period (from the novel).

    5. Patrician 2 and 3: very addictive game. More like a building/trading sims than RTS.

Edit: 6. C&C: I like the first one and the expack. Fun game play. Good music and even the installation program. Missed this one on the original list.

    7. Kohan-Immortal Sovereigns: the only RTS survived TW invasion. I like the effects and customizable squad (especially, after modding a little).

    8. XCOM-Apocalypse: not the best in the series, but I like the squad-base tactical in real time.

    9. Call of Duty, Halo, Vietcong, Delta Force series: fun action/shooter games, but not much replay value for SP.

    10. Half love half hated category:

    - SWAT series, GR, Rainbow Six series: Spec Op thrill. Unfortunately, I'm not very good at Spec Op type of missions (too much restriction). I have most of them but haven't finished any yet.

    - Civ 1-3: so much fun but annoying at time.

    Console games:

Dynasty Warriors 3 and 4: the only console games that I own and play.

So I'm getting a sense that Fallout 2 and Zelda, Ocarina are two really superb games. I've not played or even seen anything about either of them. What kind of PC would be needed to play them (mine is very old), and are they still obtainable? I'm not going to be able to update my PC anytime soon, and I'm starved for new gaming experiences. Any opinions would be quite welcome, thanks.

The first time you faced an obelisk of light you knew true fear, even now that charging up sound sends shivers down my spine. The FMVs and digital music were just the icing on the cake. The first game I ever played multi-player on a PC with a null modem and every single battle was like a game of chess. My favorite game ever.
Fortunately, the AI never has more than one. I was fun to take a base defending by the light tower, especially one with lot of SAMs and gun turets. I usually send a couple of Mammoths to draw fire form the tower, then slip a few APCs full of engineers and grenadiers past the defense to take out the power plans.

I guess, it is much more difficult in MP.

Yep, that's the one . There was a program on the History Channel about them awhile back, but I couldn't remember what they were called. In the game you had to approach them differently, but they sure were effective.

    1) Shogun: Total War - (vanilla; never played Mongol Invasion). I've played it death; it's the most fun game ever! (CA are you listening? )

Medieval: Total War - Meh. Didn't live up to STW's prestige at all (I've never been as extremely disappointed).

Rome: Total War - Has a lot of potential. But it is still very fun to play especially with the spanking new graphics. (They really need to make the battles longer and open the battlemap just a bit by loosening the red-line).

The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape From Butcher Bay - Had a blast with this game. Starbreeze needs to make a new one. NOW!!

Fallout 2 (also 1) I have never played for various reasons, but it is a very old PC game. It is still available in its various budget incarnations, including one edition where it is packaged with number 1, but a little hard to find. In theory it should work on any modern PC, but I remember hearing about a few problems people had encountered.

Zelda: TOOT is a console game. Originally released on the N64, but later ported to the GameCube. The GC edition was a special pre-order bonus feature with the latest in the series, WindWaker, but I think they later released the port for normal sale. The original N64 version is my favourite - I just cannot adjust to having tiny loading times in the game; I spent hundreds of hours playing the original version, so all the menu accessing etc in the game is now at an instinctive level for me, and adding a half second delay to that messes my timing up. However the port does feature slightly better graphics and has a second, special quest called 'the master quest'. Basically that is a harder version of the game with a few changes here and there.

I don't have ten either. Fantasy and role-playing just don't turn my crank much (I've tried); teamwork and planning seems to keep me happily occupied.

    5. Call of Duty
    4. c&c, Tiberian Sun
    3. S.W.A.T.3
    2. Medieval: TotalWar
    1. Shogun: TotalWar

Lock On: Modern Air Combat is worth the price just for the A-10. The graphics are insane and the flying is sweet. Need a bear of a system to run that pig though. It will bring my AMD64-3000/9800Pro to its knees when things are maxed. But if you tune it down and don't have too many planes in the air, it flies well and still looks incredible.

Thanks! This really seems to be a good idea to make the arena more intresting!

This list is just: which games on any console did you enjoy the most?

I adjusted my list a bit, it is more correct now, but still the distance between the no. 1 and the no. 2 is to small, isn't it TosaInu?
STW gets a lot of 1st places, great!

Owwwww my favorite console games. So many! Generaly speaking console games kick the behind of the pc when it comes to fun. Nothing beats mario smash melee if you can get more than 2 people, you can be so annoying I also adore Devil may cry, have yet to play the third tho. Viewtifull Joe, who can resist something as genius as that, it just don't get old. And all these crazy horror titles like Silent Hill and Eternal darkness. Too many quality titles to just pick ten!

Oh well, if we're allowed to throw console games into the mix that changes everything. A good console game is usually more 'fun' than a good PC game, but a good PC game is a more filling experience. The PC is the thinking man's console methinks.
I've already given my top 10 PC, so for top 10 console (including Amiga, Spectrum and such) I'd say:

Wild Cup Soccer - if only real football had guns, genetically enchanced rhinos and swords. The beautiful game at its ugliest.
Mario Tennis - my joint favorite 4 player party smash. Mixed doubles anyone?
Goldeneye - my joint favorite 4 player party smash. The game that really put FPS into the lounge console market, its just too good as long as no-one picks 'slappers only'.
Perfect Dark - a more adult version of Goldeneye. Not quite as good as its 'prequel' but still excellent for the adundance of new game modes and options.
Super Mario World - huge. Every time I think I've finished this one I find more things still to do. Fun and frustrating in perfect balance.
Tower Assault - legendary storm in and shoot everyone classic.
Lemmings - I finished this game... does that make me a bad person?
Elite - need I say more?
Golden Axe I/II - awesome hack, slash and spell platformer. Great fun two player.
Seventeen Swords - ninjas, guns and general havoc. You couldn't save this game and when I completed it, it took about 10/15 hours of play. Imagine the anger if someone turned off the console while you'd paused it to go out, but it was worth it just to start again.

I can't make a top ten in order of how much I like them, but here are my favourite games, as I think of them:

    Fallout (PC)
    Fallout 2 (PC)
Baldur's Gate 2: Shadows of Amn (PC)
    Darksun: Shattered Lands (PC)
    The Genie's Curse (PC)
Final Fantasy III (6 in japan/psx rerelease) (SNES, PSX)
    Final Fantasy 7 (PSX, PC)
Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island (SNES)
    Civilization 2 (PC)
    Medieval: Total War (PC)
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (SNES)

Honourable mentions: Donkey Kong Country II (SNES), Super Mario World (SNES), Torment (PC), Dynasty Warriors 3 (Ps2)

As so can probably guess, I'm a huge fan of RPG games, as well as turn based strategy and 2d platformers.

Fallout 2 is not "very" old, it was released in 1998. It will run on windows xp just fine, and if it doesn't, there are fan-made patches to ensure that it does.

Minimum specs for Fallout 2 is a 90 mhz processor with 16 megs of RAM, btw.

The numerical order here is largely irrelevant
    1. MTW/VI
    2. Civil War Generals II -- especially the MP, and this one was great for modding. AI was weak, but I'm partial to good Civil War games.
    3. Red Baron 3D -- Excellent campaign.
    4. Spaceward Ho -- Laugh, but it is a fun little game, and can be extremely challenging if you set it up right.
    5. SM's Gettysburg
    6. SM's Antietam
    7. Lords of the Realm II
    8. STW/MI
    9. Tie Fighter
    10. Civil War Bull Run

IL-2 series doesn't make my list simply because of the problems with uber laser cannon gunners, lack of an interesting campaign, and problems with historical balance. I gave up after FB...too many immersion killing moments in what could be the most immersive sim ever. If they could just graft on RB3D's campaign...
    Rome Total War, it's not a game, it's a do-it-yourself project.

ah, you young'uns. you've missed so many ;)

    1. Empire (8 bit)
    2. Zork (8 bit text only)
    3. Adventure (8 bit text only)
    4. Sim City (the original 8 bit)
    5. Scott Adams adventure games, Fun Land (8 bit text only)
    6. Railroad Tycoon (Sid Meiers 8 bit)
    7. Railroad Tycoon II (Poptop)
    8. Railroad Tycoon III (Poptop)
    9. Civilization
    10. Hunt for Red October (8 bit)

    11. Island of Kesmai (8 bit, online only, Genie and Compuserve)
    12. Air Warrior (Kesmai Corp. online only)
    13. Asheron's Call (online only)
    14. World War II Online (online only)
    15. Total Annihilation
    16. Temple of Apshai (8 bit)
    17. Pong (arcade)
    18. Donkey Kong (arcade)
    19. Trek (main frame ascii graphic)
    20. Pacman (arcade)
    21. Pirates (Sid Meiers 8 bit)

those are in no particular order and i included an extra 11 because of my vast experience in gaming :) there are other good ones i didnt include, like Jumpman and some other 8 bit titles and maybe Galactica in the arcade arena and a simple, but addictive arcade space game where you had one little space ship and flew against an AI or another player, the object being to shoot the other guy. it had the option of putting in a sun for gravity effects and doing wrap around screens. oh, and let's not forget Asteroids :)

Lords of the Realm II had an interesting campaign system, which in my eyes total war borrowed heavily from, but the battles were a complete mess.

I thought I was the only person in the world who'd ever bought this game! Oh man...I need to dig this out and play again. It was just too hard for me when I first got it, back in the day.

Also, every one of you is completely insane. How could you not put up the great and mighty BATTLETOADS!?

    1) Baldur's Gate 2
    2) Battletoads (also, Battletoads vs. Double Dragon)
    3) Mortal Kombats 2 and 4
    4) Shogun: Total War
    5) Dungeon Keeper
    6) Diablo (the original)
    7) Contra (all of them)
    8) Doom 2
    9) Both Fallouts (I actually shed a tear when Black Isle closed down)
    10) Warcraft 2

There are honourable mentions abound, but I'll only list a few: Final Fantasy 7, The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles series for the Nintendo consoles (2-4), Street Fighter 2, Die Hard Arcade, Manhunt, Day of Defeat mod for Half-life, WWF No Mercy (admit it) and that crazy X-Men game for the arcade that allowed six player to play simultaneously.
