AcquireAncillary archimedes chance 80
This means that to get him, you need to...
a) Have a general in a settlement.
b) Have said general have full movement points left (IE: he must not have moved in the turn)
c) You need a Scriptorium (or better)
d) The turn number needs to be between 5 and 117 (6-116)
e) Even with all these conditions, there is still only an 80& chance

I've had him numerous times. He's pretty darn good for attacking and defending walls, which is very useful amongst the tiny provinces in Greece.
He is definately a character you want on the frontlines with a commanding general
Have had him too a good number of times. He is certainly one of the better named ancilliaries. But there are others that are equally good I think, just in other departments.
You don't get him most likely because others have gotten him first, so be faster with the scriptorium!
Of an interesting note is that usually when I have build my first scriptorium is that the governor there will get 3-4 named ancilliaries right away. That is rather interesting and can make an average general into a good one, or a good governor into a really great administrator. This is also why it is a very bad thing to mod in a scriptorium to Rome, it will soak up most of them quite fast.

I think I have gotten him, but I often forget which famous guys I have acquired. He was pretty darn usefull in reality as well...

I've had him before, and it was before 117bc. Unfortunately, this was before I knew about swapping retinue, so he died along with my faction leader, Ariston of Chios, Aristophanes lol. My faction leader was surrounded by great inventors, scientists, philosophers.
Just so everybody is crystal clear on this, this means that he only appears between:d) The turn number needs to be between 5 and 117 (6-116)
Summer of 267 BC (turn 6) and the Winter of 211 BC (turn 116).

Oh, right, I think I got him around 215 so I was pretty lucky.
Thats because he died in 211BC... Nice, hadn't noticed that.

I think other factions (non-you) don't build libraries or learning centers very aggressively, so you have a higher chance of getting good guys. But in my greek game, I have built scriptorium in athens for 3 turns now, still no archimedes, what the heck? I checked rome, it only has academy, no other romans have scriptorium. So maybe egyptians grabbed him, any other possible reasons he is not popping up?
Yes, it's touches like that which prevent me dissing this game. I only have to watch that eruption at Mt Etna to feel all warm and fuzzy towards CA.Originally Posted by Kraxis
I think the natural disasters are a great touch, quite funny too, if they don't happen to you.
