I just picked up M:TW a few weeks ago, and man I love it. So after partially playing through a couple games and learning some basic stuff, it started quitting after pressing end year...so I reinstalled. I started a new game as the English, normal difficulty, and it's running fine. It's about 1140 or so. the problem is I havent been able to build any advanced units. No crossbowman (or higher). No chivalric men at arms. No billmen. I have territorries with all the required buildings and then some. I've built all this stuff before in the previous games with even less resources and earlier in the game. But I have only played a couple games , still a newb, so is it possible when I created the game I checked some weird option? Or some other strange thing I'm overlooking? I have the budget version with no rules, so learning the game is a real pain. But I did see in the FAQ on one site that those units don't become available until 1205, the high era, but this is the same starting scenario (1087) as a played in the previous games, and I don't think I even got to 1200 in either before I decided to start over. Yet I've built those units in those games. But I didn't bother trying to save those old games when I reinstalled (if thats even possible) so I can't reference to be sure. But I'm already building higher than citadels which I never even got to before. Also, some other factions have crossbowmen, which, again, I can't build. This game is going great but I don't wan't to waste any more time on it if it is some corrupt file or something.
