    DSL:

    2005-04-21 21:56:18 EST: 663 / 127
Your download speed : 679056 bps, or 663 kbps.
    A 82.8 KB/sec transfer rate.
Your upload speed : 130581 bps, or 127 kbps.

Feels pretty slow at times, though.

The other competing companies are getting more of the market than BT because they (supposedly, I dunno) offered a bit more for a bit less. BT are increasing the speed of all four of their broadband packages for free in an effort to control more of the market. The speed increase you get depends on your package and on what your line will support; if your existing line can't take the 2MB then you get the closest it can take. The upgrade is automatic, taking about 3 months to filter through according to the Drone on the Phone I spoke to. However because I phoned up to ask when my upgrade was going to happen I was moved a few months ahead

Just phone up the most suitable looking BT customer service number and start asking about the free broadband upgrade. You should eventually be passed along to the correct Drone.

Your upload speed : 1161265 bps, or 1134 kbps.

    Thank you BKK (my ISP)!!

    [edit]:
I just realised that the above numbers are completely wrong by 10 times…
My line should be a 10Mbit line… then it dawned on me… the test is on an American server a bit far from my computer.
Took another test on a Danish server, a bit closer to home and killed the test.
The TCP test clocked in 6,18Mbit/s download and 4,75Mbit/s upload. The UDP test however crashed as it only has a 15Mbit/s max limit.
The UDP test is needed to calculate your broadband width.
    I am again comforted.

Chinanet! Restrictions everywhere! Random slowdowns, disconnects etc.

    Your line speed:

    1250 Kbps

    156 Kbytes/sec

I would never go back to the 56K, either. Besides, broadband is much cheaper here

Yeah it's the same with Telewest's Blueyonder, I started off 512kbs then paid for the upgrade to 1mb, then last year they boosted that to 1.5 free of charge, then in March (IIRC) they boosted it again, this time to 2mbs also free of charge. So I am hoping after seeing your post, that they may decide to increase it again (you never know, they may), to out do the competition. It is good there is competition about, as it means each company has to do something a bit extra to get more customers, and keep existing ones.

2 Mb broadband, thank you Mr British Telecom... Although I hear that they can have up to 1Gb in Hong Kong. Damn, why did we have to give that back to China...

As far as I know, none of the companies out there charge that much, not even for their top package. I realise I may be wrong, but I haven't seen £100 per month quoted anywhere. Mine costs £35 pm, that's 2mb p/s and with no caps. If there are any companies with a package at £100 p/m I would be interested to know what you get for that.

    56k dial-up and I hate it.

I've never had broadband, but I did have nine months or so of 512kb/s ADSL, unlimited.

Problem was that my flatmate hogged the bandwidth downloading a neverending torrent of porn porn and more porn, so even with what should be a respectable connection, I generally had pings of 800+ ms and had to unplug him at three in the morning to sneak in an hour of online M:TW.
