Thread: game doesnt work when modding
artavazd 21:30 04-27-2005
i have modded the faction characteristics (ex. trader henry, sailor napoleon) when i try to start an imperial campain the game just shuts off on its own and my screen returns to my screensaver. I have vanilla rtw and i was wondering if the game is malfunctioning becasue of the changes i made and if so how do i go back cuz i dont remeber what some of the faciton charactristics were originialy thanks.

Start the game with RTW shortcut on your desktop with this line in the target "C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\RomeTW.exe" -show_err
When your RTW crashes you should see window telling you cause of that

On your desktop icon right click on it and click properties and in the target line add -show_err

i added (-show_err) in the target box and it stated that this is not valid

it looked like this in the target box: ("C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\RomeTW.exe"-show_err)

Should look like this:

"C:\Program Files\Activision\Rome - Total War\RomeTW.exe" -show_err

Put a space before -show_err

another way is just to go into ur dos prompt and run RTW from their but when u run the execute just add -show_err after it. does the same thing.

Well, that narrows it down a bit.
I usually crash RTW right at the start by having something wrong with
an ancillary file.

I recommend restoring the original file and make sure it won't CTD then.
Once you have a working file, make a single change and see if that works.
You can waste a lot of time on this if you're not careful. It can be something like a letter not capitalized.

Also, if you've got the -show_err working, try hitting Alt-F4 before you start your campaign, when you're on the faction selection menu. That will close RTW and show a dialog with any errors the game found when parsing the files, but that weren't game-crashing.
