    Default Shogun:Total War @ 1280 x 1024

I finally installed the game and got it running.

I have a 19" LCD, whose native resolution is 1280 x 1024. I wound the game up to this resolution and played a battle started a campaign.

    * Y U C K # - the graphics representing the troops were so poor they made them look like stickmen. No detail whatsoever.

While, the units maybe better balanced in a scissors, rock, paper, type of way, watching a battle with stickmen is not for me.

This is a real disappointment, as I really looked forward to playing Japanese battles. I will continue playing my Medieval:Total War.

PS: From an Game Historical Point of you I can see where MTW came from.

I can play using this resolution and it looks fine. You need to troubleshoot m8, as you are not seeing it as you should. Best not to make quick assumptions ... why would so many love the game if the graphics sucked?

I tend to run the campaign view at 1280-x1024 and battles at 1024x768 ot improve MP performance, but I have an ancient PC with a 16MB graphics card. Use FULLSCREEN mode, not WIDESCREEN, make sure your desktop resolutions are greater than or equal to the resolutions you are using in the game, try using SOFTWARE in video options instead of your graphics card. Finally, play with the refresh rate of your monitor if all else fails.

If you describe both your problem and your settings in more detail we are more likely going to be able to offer useful advice. Good luck.

    Thanks.
All details are turned up to high. Both Campaign and Battle setting are set at 1280x1024. All the setting are the same as I use for MTW.

I check my graphics card settings a GeForce4 Ti4200 and wind up the detail. That may help and I will get back to you.

I play STW at 1600x1200 and highest detail, looks fine to me, course I played it when it came out.

The little 2D sprites were GREAT when Shogun came out 6 years ago, and I for one don't have a lot of time to kick back and watch the little guys fight when I'm commanding a battle ... to much to manage, given how I like to play.

Try posting a screenshot. As a hex wargamer, what I consider "great graphics" most of you would consider awful, and vice-versa.

Kiwitt, are you positive on the aspect ratio? Are you sure you're not supposed to be at, like, 1280x800 or thereabouts?

Most monitors run at a ratio of 1.5/1. So if you divide 800x600 you will get 1.5 and 1024/768=1.5. And so on with 1280/960 and 1600/1200. He should be running the correct ratio, unless he has widescreen.

Don't mean to be a prick, but standard ratio isn't 1.5 (try dividing 1024 by 768).

    Standard ratio is 1.3333333.. (1 and 1/3). 1024x768, 800x600, etc.
Widescreen (EG laptop) ratio is 1.6. 1280x600, 1900x1190, 1024x640, etc.

Thanks for correcting me, I did the math a long time ago and thought that was what it was. Oh well all the ones I listed shared the same results and are standard ratio.

    That's cool.

The reason I bring it up is, if you have a 1.333 ratio LCD monitor and STW thinks you have a 1.6, then everyone's going to look REALLY tall. Vice-versa results in vice-versa, fat sprites. (IIRC)

Kiwitt, you might try changing the Video settings. If you're on Primary Display Driver, try the driver named after your video card. Then try the Software Mode. Try all of them, it could be THAT simple.
