You are not really wasting your time as you already have the connection when you expand into their area, thus getting the trade from early on. Also you gain a valuable insight into the other factions' standings, are they winning are they losing, are they strong/weak and so on. I urge you to also get their maps when you get the traderights, thus you can see their extent well, getting a feel on which faction will win the coming wars.

Sometimes, when you ask for map info, other factions think you are planning an invasion and rudely dismiss you. If you are allies with them, they cancel the alliance.

Trade Rights are well worth it though.

If it is the first contact you will almost always get it if you offer a map of your own lands as well. If they decline then get teh trade rights first and then offer the map for map, and it should be fine.

In my current game playing as Carthage, i offered every other faction map info in exchange for map info, within a short space of time I could almost all of the map, the face they could see my territory was of little concern aslong as I was strong and powerful. They almost always accept that offer especially if its first contact and you offer trade rights to them aswell.

I didn't like the Greek/Roman arrogance when they dealt with my Scythian diplomats. I asked for their maps and they demanded on average 2k denarii a turn of tribute for average of 4 turns. Annoying. I gave up trying to see their maps after awhile.

They are evidently poor, though--some can't spare much more than 1k den for my maps, and when I try to go higher than that they say they cannot equal the offer.

Since the patch, I find I use a lot fewer diplomats. Pre-patch, they were great profit centers via map selling.

I like to have a few (maybe 3) basically fan out and get map info and trade rights.

The early game money you spend on ships to take diplomats afar could be better spent, I think. You really don't get any benefit from having trade rights and map info from factions on the other side of the world. You can walk a diplomat across the world long before you'll need to know what's going on over there.

Ah, how I miss 1.0, where one could go out and sell map information for 20.000 denari to every faction one met.

And five turns later sell map information to the same faction for 10.000

I found that you can get some money for maps, just not obscene amount like in 1.0. You can get up to 1200 with most factions for map info in 1.2. You can also sell alliances for up to 5000. I've found that Greece pays the most. You should always start at a high number with them, as they frequently just accept. If you offer map info at 1200, and they say, no. Counter with 1000 or 900 and they might make an offer.

At least such arrogance is historically accurate.

And I'm not sure if the other faction necessarily can't equal your offer. I took it to mean that they simply wouldn't.
Ah...morality. The last bastion of a coward.

I actually start peddling ceasefires at 10k, maps at 3k and alliances at 15k at an average 1:3 chance of getting my initial bid. Ofcourse I use my best diplomat for theese negotiations. I also found that getting protectorates is really too easy, just beat the severly on numerous occasions while the method of conquering some or almost all of their territory just pisses them off and you´ll never get them as protectorate or even a ceasefire.
