Thread: on nightmares

    Default on nightmares

just woke up from a nightmare this morning. so its still fresh in my mind. but my experience is, whenever i have a nightmare, it feels like a 15 min long scenario that just keeps getting repeated in more and more complex iterations. they always involve one thing, say me being chased by monsters in a huge building [thank you video games and b-movies] but i never leave the building though i am always racing to get out. anyways the scenario keeps looping because as i'm about to get out of the building, i somehow find myself back to where i started and the chase begins anew.

the wierd thing is, with each new iteration, the whole scenario gets more and more complex and absurd and as that happens, i also begin observing my consciousness slowly beging to wake up as it gets stronger with each new iteration. because in the nightmare i begin noticing more and more absurd things like 'these monsters shouldn't exist', or 'why am i being forced to repeat the same things over and over again.' then once my consciousness reaches critical mass, say after 5 different iterations of the same scenario, i become fully aware and wrest myself from the nightmare.

about 30% of my nightmares are finished by my alarm clock and 70% are finished by me realizing the silliness of it all. but it is wierd observing myself become more and more aware over time of the absurdity of the scenarios. just wondering if others have similar experiences.

I used experience what you did when I was a kid. I stopped having nightmares as I grew older. I think it's because I'm aware that I'm dreaming.

    Wink Re: on nightmares

that happened to me a time or two......i don´t have nightmares anymore...not is a very long time....but when i dream the dream usually ends because i become aware that i´m dreaming...so i usually wake up in a couple of minutes...

the up side is that after i become aware that i´m dreaming i can control the dream anyway i want....so in certain dreams that can be a very "entertaining" 2 minutes

Yeah Nokh I have the same thing hapen to me. I am always being chased by penguins or people who want to kill me. Thanks Qunetin Tarantino and Batman movies!
But the most ennoying part is that they always give you a bad feeling afterwards.

I like the feeling after nightmares. I don't tend to get them much anymore but it's still nice when I do.

I rarely dream and only about 1/100 of those are nightmares. The feeling afterwards is kinda cool, adrenaline and all. Overall mine are related to something that I recently saw/heard or experienced. Generally I notice they are nightmares and subconciously end or mess with them so they are no longer sleep disturbing.

I had an odd dream last night...i was standing at the edge of a corridor, with people walking past, when suddenly my girlfriend (who ditched me months ago for no real reason) walked past. She said hi, but in an uncertain way, and when i tried to say hi, i couldn't bring myself to say it. And then she just carried on going, dissapearing into the crowds. Just as i lost sight of her i started running after, but then i suddenly woke up. It gave me a creepy feeling...

There's some dreams that don't always fit in the category of hardcore nightmares but are pretty disturbing. Like for example I had one where I fell off a building and I died except I didn't really die. Because this made no sense I realized it and woke up. That was by far the most messed up dream that I remember.

Whilst semi-awake, I was thinking through how I might have a conversation with someone about something... I envisioned myself on some stairs... and I slipped. I found myself having a sort of spaz-attack in bed, trying to save myself from falling all the way down the stairs.

It's not a nightmare, but I have a (very) recuring dream where I am in a big hotel, have been there a few days, but don't have enough money to pay at the desk when checking out. So I can't leave. I'm stuck there hiding in different rooms, being pursued through halls and ducts and stairways, always staying one step ahead of the hotel people chasing me. I'm stuck there because I can't afford to leave.

It's actually fun, but I have this dream endlessly. Well over a hundred times now I'm sure.

    I must need a shrink.

yeah, i must have some kind of censorship panel in my head. every time i'm lucid enough in a dream to start "entertaining" myself, the dream shifts or i lose lucidity. sucks!

worst one was when i was with a dream-woman in a certain act.. my hands where on her head.. she was kneeling, i was standing.. you get the picture i hope. just as it was getting good, i suddenly start losing lucidity, as i struggle to get it back i notice that her head has become detached and i'm holding it in front of me.. and she was angry about something so the disembodied head was berating me. that one left deep emotional scars, i'm sure.

anyway, i've never really had nightmares though, i mean not really scary ones. very occasionally i'll have one of the embarrassment ones.. like discovering you're naked in public or something. most of my dreams are just so f'ing weird, i try not to think about them.

Oh, you like fall over in a dream and you get this weird feeling in you stomach and I can feel it and I'm sort of half-awake for a moment, thinking about the feeling. And then I still have the "aftertaste"/"aftershock" (whatever you want to call it) in my stomach.

    I like that feeling.

I had nightmare last night. I have not had a nightmare for ages.

I don't really know what happened. There was me, my sister, and I Ford Prefect. My sister asked me to search the internet for robbie williams, which is strange, because i know next to nothing about him. For some reason I get scared, start running out of my room (where the PC is) and screaming, then start falling down the stairs. I then woke up with my mouth open.

I really needed the toilet, but could not get up, incase I was still dreaming and something odd happened. Eventually I fell back to sleep.

I hate/love those falling dreams, for one I hit and everyone else I know doesn't. Doesn't seem to bode well for my mental health, but I do get the funny spasm and it usually wakes me up when I want to get up....

It's not a nightmare, but I get once in a while this weird dream where I dream that I wake up and realise that I'm late from something. Then, in the dream, I go back to sleep as I have no means of transportation to whereever I was going to go to. It's really confusing when I wake up from that dream, to find that I'm in time, that is, if I realise that it was a dream...

I used to get really realistic dreams of waking up and such. Always with some crazy twist that makes no sense whatsoever. Doesn't happen anymore, now my sleep is basically untroubled.

I have been told its Impossible to dream your own death. You will always awaken at the moment before you die. Apparently if you dream your dead then your actually are.

Not sure how people know that though!?!?!

I often get the falling sensation/dream if im falling asleep anyware but my own bed and i wake with quite a violent jolt. It scares the crap out of anyone near me at the time and can also be quite painful for me!!

Heh, i have random spasms all the time. Occasionally, i'll fall asleep with my eye's open while listening to the radio. I'm slightly aware of what's happening, although i feel a bit disconnected, and suddenly my legs just jolt. It's cool and creepy.
