When does an Ally Fight with You?

Generals,

A while ago I played a game and sat on my hill awaiting the French enemy to attack me.

Then shock horror out of the corner of my eye another force appeared on the map, what the hell was going on? it was the Hungarians, they proceeded to attack the French my enemy, turned out the Hungarians were my allies.

There assistance was most unexpected. I sat on my hill and watched while the poor Hungarians got creamed, so I did a quick flank march and routed the French and won the day.

Question is what makes an Ally actually fight with you in a battle. It has never happened since.

No idea myself. But if I can I always try to relieve sieges on my allies. Relieved Constantinople 7 times once for the Byzantines. Eventually the Turks took it, but somehow my armies were ready next turn to bring into the Hungarians arms. . .

An ally will only fight with you if you both attack the same province or are relieving an ally under seige.

If you both attack the same province whichever nation has the largest force (prior ro the battle) will get control of the province. If you are relieving a seige all you get is a thank you.

usually when your ally has a province with an army in it next to the province that you're attacking, they'll help, that's why I always ally myself with the neighbors of the empire that i'm attacking

Isn't whichever ally has the largest force at the end of the battle gets the province? I can't remember for sure, but I could've sworn that was the case.

Yap... That's it.... I tried to conquer Pomerania but the Poles were my allies and had a bigger army so they had Pomerania :(

Yes, I was trying to give Denmark back to the Danes by aiding their attack on the rebels. I went in with 64 men and they had 80 (all royals). They charged the thralls before I could get my naptha throwers in and lost 19 men. They left my turks in control of the country.

Well, you could always abandon the province and let the loyalists revolt . . . .

Though I think this will leave you at war with the Danes instead of allied with them.

I suppose that's always a problem, how to give your alies help, but not take over their land. I suppose it's possible to sit it out a little bit, until you get a peasant rebelion instead of a loyalist, and then hope your ally goes for it and takes it before an enemy. Or, if an enemy does take it, that your ally can take it from that enemy.

It's always kind of a pain. It'd be nice if you could just sell off the land to someone.

if he comes along he asks you to hand over the province peace fully,

And i usuly get help from an ally when im beseiged in my castle and moove a unit up to releve the seige without Takeing ppl out of the castle.

I will always March my troops to the aid of a besiged ally.

But i hadnt noticed that the larger army in a combined attack took the province,

That is a Jihad, it is kind of the Muslim version of a crusade. It can only be used to retake land once held by that faction. While that is somewhat limited in scope the offset is they are rather cheap to build and you can have many at one time.

Multiple Jihads is a very cheesy tactic, though in some occasions it turns out to be quite useful especially when using some mods...
For example i love playing as the Turkish in early as after you vanquish the Eggys you don't have a navy, ending with your coastal provinces exposed to naval invasion...
After a few game tweaks i did i find myself building jihads in order to keep tripoli and antioch from being overrun by the Italians who sends at least one stack per year...

It's pretty cool when an ally fights alongside you.

In one of my VI Campaign games as the Irish, I had landed in the British Isles and attacked the Welsh. To my pleasant surprise the Saxons also attacked the Welsh.

When the battle started I watched as the Saxons (with flags flying) moved en masse towards the Welsh, while I started a flanking maneuver. It was like a scene right out of Braveheart as our armies moved over the rolling hills towards the waiting Welsh armies.

That was one battle I saved as a replay to watch again...
