    Default Hidden Units and Factions

To some of you I may sound a little amateur when I say this but:

Are there hidden units to unlock on rome total war?!

Here's a picture off of the Rome: Total War Website.

Have you ever seen Parthian Camle Riders? Yes. Cataphract Camels, but these are more numidian camel riders. I've found more for several factions and look at this!

It may be just me and my game but I'm curious.

Well the second screenshot is almost certainly a screenshot from a mod, possibly 'Chivalry:Total War' .

The first one is likely also a screenshot from a mod where the Persians have been given 'bedouin' camel riders as a buildable unit.

Nah, the first one is from one of the preview screenshots... likely of Time Commanders or something...

Yeah there are loads of units that never made it into the final game but which crop up in screenshots on the .com. Much better-looking Macedonian hypaspists, ropey-looking Seleucids, and some cool-looking anacrhonistic Egyptian phalanx spearmen with black "war crowns". I think they were all dropped before the game went public.

There's a problem about that mercenaries part. Mercenaries are put in green. Although I think there is something hidden in Rome total war... somewhere.

Using Hadrian you can make units buildable by factions. I've successfully managed to make Spain build Sacred Band Cavalry by way of experimentation, so.

And what is the sense in it ( in my opinion it is bit unhistorical ).

A few of the units in the early screenshots have made it into the released version of the game, although not without modding. Nearly all of them are utter rubbish though.

    Examples:

Some of the old hoplites I really like though and it's a shame they haven't released them free since RTW's release.

And this unit is a complete embarrasment to CA. Say hello to the monkey arms barbarian crew.

Just what were they thinking? And were the original modellers fired?

Well Ilia, it does make some sense when the original CA-provided factions themselves were unhistorical. A prime example would be Thrace having no light shock cavalry e.g. Light Lancers despite them being a superb light cavalry people in history. Thracian light cavalry, if we believe the cherry vanilla version, consisted only of missile cavalry, which is patently untrue. Thus in my version of RTW Thrace has Macedonian Light Lancers, but to even things out I reduced their charge bonus by 2.

Professor, that first picture you posted, i personally think they look good. Judging from their shields, they are Thracian units, and i think this would have given a lot more variety to an otherwise boring faction. But i have to agree with you on the gorilla people. They put shame to CA.

Yea the Greek officer is ok (there's a Thracian, Seleucid and Macedon version, the Greek one is missing though), the best of the bunch probably - although the Sacred Band Carthaginian model is ok (although I changed his outfit in the picture). I tested out just about all the old models and textures I could, and there's probably only a few useable ones there. The biggest disappointment was an older style militia hoplite - his shoulders were missing. If anyone can fix it so I can add it in my mod (to be released some time this century) that would be nice.

As to finding the old models and units yourself, I suggest you get the tool from the TWcenter that unpacks all the model textures. And the DDS file plugin for Photoshop/Paintshop or whatever if you haven't got it. Then it's a case of looking in the data\models_unit folder and looking for any models that aren't featured in the descr_model_battle.txt file. If you know anything about modding new units, it's a doddle. Alternatively, pm me at some time and I can probably send a text file with some of the alternative units.
