Fuck Me Jesus was. From there on out, though, they kind of became one of those washed-out semi-BM bands. However, any band who named an album Panzer Division Marduk automatically rules.Originally Posted by A.Saturnus

Last summer I saw Vader, Polish death metal band, one of the oldest on the European scene. Some would describe them as "oldscool", others as "retro"but nevertheless, great band.

I would offer you some clips of my band but we don't have a website...

Vader's playing in my city with Aborted, Suffocation and Cryptopsy on October 30th. Can't friggin' wait.Originally Posted by Macedon

I like all kinds of metal. Arch Enemy is great (and live they REALLY rule). Children of Bodom is brilliant. I also like Dimmu Borgir, Tristania, Epica, Trail of Tears, Paradise Lost, My Dying Bride, Moonspell, Machine Head, Orphaned Land, ...
And have seen most of these live.

I used to listen to alot of metal before, but now only a few of those bands still survive on my listening list. Sepultura, Pantera, Tiamat, Soulfly, and early Paradise Lost would be the most prominent ones, with a few new ones like System of a Down and Rammstein added too. Before I listened to a lot of different bands of this sort, from Motorhead and Iron Maiden to Napalm Death, Suicidal Tendencies, Exploited, and My Dying Bride, but I kind of grew out of that 'pure power' phase.

I've tried doing some research on black metal sites, but the reviews are all very pretentious and are way too superfluous in their descriptions to help the laywoman decide what else to try.
Death metal's way too aggressive for me, but I like the corny 'graveyard' ambience of some of this black metal I've heard. It's nice 'stare at the ceiling for a few hours and think about non-sense' music.
P.S. Adrian, Debussy is just what the doctor ordered.

Personally, I hate Burzum, but if it's because you want the 'dungeon music' feel, Mortiis' album The Stargate should be up your alley. It's not metal, of course, but arguably, neither is Burzum.
I'm really soft + I never had long enough hair to bang properly.
Metallica got me into metal back in the eighties.
A couple of problems I have with many metal (and hiphop) acts
-they look and act very silly indeed, and have silly lyrics
-when the music is not instrumental, I prefer to have some singing involved
I saw Slipknot last year, and they were good. Some singing, very silly-looking.

Slipknot isn't metal. I hate to be the one to say for the first time here.
Do you know the new stuff from Kreator? It's great. Still one of my favorite band. Just forget "Endorama" exists. *shudder*I would stick with the old Voivod, personally. Same goes for Kreator. Ministry and Cathedral are sure bets right now.
What is it then? I like them. Ok, they are hyped, but why care?Slipknot isn't metal. I hate to be the one to say for the first time here.
Saw Tristania some months ago, together with Nightwish in Wieze. Let's just say Nightwish killed them, buried them and rocked on their graves...I like all kinds of metal. The term is "nu-metal", which a great deal of people don't even like because it has the term "metal" in it. The more elitist of us just call it "mallcore".Originally Posted by A.Saturnus

It would appear to me that Nu Metal is a sub-category of metal. Hence the name. But ok, I'm long past my elitist phase...Originally Posted by NeonGod
"Nu-metal", or "new metal"m as it began, is just the name attributed to it by the media when Korn came around. It has nothing to do with metal, but to your typical mainstream consumer who doesn't listen to metal, it sounds like it. Hence the insistance by fans of the genre that it really is metal, and resigned repetition of this same old rhetoric every time it happens.Originally Posted by A.Saturnus

If you're fighting fair you've made a miscalculation.
I'm into metal since almost 10 years now. I listen to bands like Marduk, Mayhem, Immortal, Dismember and Cannibal Corpse, so I don't think I'm a typical mainstream consumer. Still, Slipknot sounds like metal to me. I don't know about Korn though."Nu-metal", or "new metal"m as it began, is just the name attributed to it by the media when Korn came around. Does anyone know the Greek band Astarte? They are among my favorites.
My first ever concert was Iron Maiden, Powerslave tour.
Other highlights of my concert-going career were Ministry at Lollapalooza (dear lord, the casualties from that mosh pit!) and the Ramones at a little club in Hamilton, Canada. Both blew me away.

Would you say that Iron Maiden and Slipknot sound similar? I would disagree. Just because someone can tune their guitars low and chug out two chords in a riff doesn't mean what they're doing is metal.Originally Posted by A.Saturnus

The first, Doomed Dark Years, sounds a bit like the early Satyricon. It's amazing that three girls from Greece can create such a cold atmosphere. Though in comparison with the others, that one might get a bit boring after you heard it a few times.
The second, Rise from Within, goes in the same direction but has more variation. They developed their own style there.
The third, Quod Superior, sicut Inferior, is IMO their best one. Still cold, hard black metal, but with their own ideas and a bit experimentation.
I would love to see them live, but they tour very little.
