Heh. I remember seeing them on the Monsters of the Millenium tour, and they really know what they're doing. There's a double live CD with them somewhere here.

So what's on my music shelf? Amorphis, Bolt Thrower, Children of Bodom, Dimmu Borgir, Emperor, Finntroll, Gamma Ray, Hammerfall, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Kilpi, Lumsk, Manowar, Nile, Opeth, Paradise Lost, Rammstein, Satyricon, Therion, Ulver, Warlock, Zyklon. Hmm, I need some more letters.

What do I care about elitist labels? I've got Madonna and Mayhem side-by-side here!

"Nu-metal", or "new metal"m as it began, is just the name attributed to it by the media when Korn came around. It has nothing to do with metal, but to your typical mainstream consumer who doesn't listen to metal, it sounds like it. Hence the insistance by fans of the genre that it really is metal, and resigned repetition of this same old rhetoric every time it happens.
I'm into metal since almost 10 years now. I listen to bands like Marduk, Mayhem, Immortal, Dismember and Cannibal Corpse, so I don't think I'm a typical mainstream consumer. Still, Slipknot sounds like metal to me. I don't know about Korn though.

    You forgot Q. Like Quorthon.

Does anyone know the Greek band Astarte? They are among my favorites.

My first ever concert was Iron Maiden, Powerslave tour.

Other highlights of my concert-going career were Ministry at Lollapalooza (dear lord, the casualties from that mosh pit!) and the Ramones at a little club in Hamilton, Canada. Both blew me away.

That's because I don't have any artists on Q at all. The late Bathory mastermind should certainly be good for that, my Bathory CDs sound great.

So what about X? edit: And Y?

    And my Scandinavian letters Å, Ä, Ö?

Xytras, a member of the Swiss band Samael (great band), has brought out a sole album under his name with orchestral instrumentation of Passage. Though, it's doubtful that can still be called metal. But I'm sure I have at least some samplers with bands starting with X. I don't know about Scandinavian letters...

Would you say that Iron Maiden and Slipknot sound similar? I would disagree. Just because someone can tune their guitars low and chug out two chords in a riff doesn't mean what they're doing is metal.
I know a lot of metal bands that don't sound like Iron Maiden. Actually bands that sound like Maiden but aren't Maiden are rather boring. But I see some similarities between Slipknot and Pantera (though, of course, Pantera were far far better).

I do, but I haven't heard much of them. Recommend me an album, if you would be so kind?
    Well, all of them
The first, Doomed Dark Years, sounds a bit like the early Satyricon. It's amazing that three girls from Greece can create such a cold atmosphere. Though in comparison with the others, that one might get a bit boring after you heard it a few times.
The second, Rise from Within, goes in the same direction but has more variation. They developed their own style there.
The third, Quod Superior, sicut Inferior, is IMO their best one. Still cold, hard black metal, but with their own ideas and a bit experimentation.
I would love to see them live, but they tour very little.

I disagree. I hate Pantera. They went from Glam Rock to the progenitor of all tough guy hardcore. Putting Slipknot and Pantera on the same tier seems right to me, as long this tier is below par.

By "early Satyricon", do you mean Nemesis Divina or Dark Medieval Times? I'm only asking for clarification on how folky it might be.

Hm...usually, I'm iffy about getting the later releases. As a general rule, earlier is better, but I'll take your advice and try to find Quod Superior, sicut Inferior.

On an unrelated note: Does it matter that they're women? I really hate it when women get attention in the metal scene for the sole point that they're women.

Well, whatever. If you don't think they are metal, I've no problem with it. Just don't expect me stop liking them.

I meant like Dark Medieval Times. I know what you mean about earlier is better. It's often that way. Too many good bands have gone downhill because of "creative development". But in this case I like the latest release better. The older things are rougher, for sure, but less sophisticated. And the new ones still feel "cold".
Well, three of them are women, but they didn't get much media attention anyway. At least here. In my opinion, they are far underrated. To be honest, I decided to try them out because I read that they are an all female black metal band (which isn't true, the drummer is a man) and I wanted to know how they sound, but their first release convinced me entirely. The later CDs I got only because it's high quality stuff.

It's really not much of my business as to whether or not you like them. I can't tell you what to like, and I have no wish to.

Arg. I found some today, but the BM elitist banned me. Man, I hate that. It sounds like it's worth some attention, though; I'll keep looking.

As for the female bit...I'm sure you know of plenty of crappy or mediocre bands that only get attention for being female.

Speaking of metal and concerts, I'm going to a Paradise Lost concert in a week. This is something that I've waited for many years to do, though it would probably be more fun if I was able to do it all those years ago...

Nevertheless, has anybody been to one of their concerts lately? Do they still play the old material (as in pre-One second songs)?

Well, I saw them 2 weeks ago. They played a set of about 100 minutes. I tought it was a great concert. But if you're looking to hear a lot of old songs I think you'll be dissapointed. They played True Belief, As I Die and 2 songs from Draconian Times. But they played the new album almost completely (it is an album release tour after all), and it sounded great. Their latest album also is great IMO.
Oh, and be there on time, the support band Orphaned Land really rules, they have a very "special" sound.
