My current Byzantine line is plagued by incestuous vices. This is the first campaign I've had with them where all are under 6 stars . The Incest and Pride lines tend to annoy me the most; they seem to pop up quite frequently. The Loon line isn't so bad if the generals are high command to begin with--the morale bonuses from command usually make up for the loss in troop morale resulting from the vice. Loonies just don't make good governors, which is fine with me. Same with the Avarice line.

I tend to look for no command-high dread/acumen for governors, and just keep them as garrison in their province. I use 4-star and greater gens on my front lines as defenders and conquerors.

I've always thought that a crazy general should be feared by an enemy too. Ya never know what the loon will do ... .

When a general has a negative morale trait, like because he is crack-brained, does this make just his unit get the negative morale, or the whole army he is leading?

    Thank you,

I think if the general leads the army (ie he is in the first 16 units you take to the field) then it goves the morale 'bonus' to the entire army. Otherwise it's just for his unit.

Also a querie on an above point, does the Command stars from a general increase a units Morale alongside with it's Valour like Valour normally would or does it only increase it's Attack and Defence?

Every two command stars adds +1 valor (which equates to +1 attack, +1 defense and +2 morale) to each unit under that general's command:

    0-1 star: no bonus
    2 stars: +1+1+2
    3 stars: same
    4 stars: +2+2+4
    5 stars: same
    6 stars: +3+3+6
    7 stars: same

    etc.

I think an Unhinged Loon vice is -3 morale. But if it's a 6-star general, he still grants a +3+3+3 to all units under his command--still a very nice bonus.

Note that the Skilled - Expert Attacker/Defender virtues add +1 to +3 valor to a general's command rating when attacking or defending, respectfully. You will see a Skilled - Expert Attacker's stars increase when you move him to attack an enemy province; likewise you will see a Skilled - Expert Defender's stars decrease when you attack an enemy province with him (because when he's in one of your provinces, his bonus is in effect).

Actually, this was changed in MTW. The command stars only affect attack/defense, and the new method of calculating the bonus, which brings in the vices & virtures, can result in bonuses to either attack or defense for each +1 command star. The morale bonus from the general now comes exclusively from the vices & virutes. This means you can have a high command star general who lowers his army's morale because he has morale penalties in his vices & virtues.

Now I'm confused! Which one is it and when was it changed - for example, with the VI expansion? etc.

I have the basic version of MTW and have not downloaded any updates. Which would apply in this case? And if I did download the patch, would it apply then???

I bet there is a chart somewhere, eh? If you know where I would appreciate knowing.
