I was rather frustrated when saw chevrons number reducing during a battle.
It was my spartan unit and they didn't retreat from battle , so I became quite dazzed about this question , anyone can explain it?

The game tracks individual soldiers ability. When your better soldiers die, the valour (chevrons) of the unit decreases.
The amount of chevrons a unit has is an average of all soldiers ability. It increases when your worse soldiers die off because the unit is made up of some very experienced soldiers.
You will notice a decrease in chevrons when you retrain a unit as well, because fresh, unexperienced soldiers are brought in, lowering the average valour of the unit.

Yes this is true, i saw my archer gold chevron unit decrease as my men were killed to bronze chevron.
Yes, manual and in-game help mention that, but it seems that there is a bug which makes all new fresh troops added not water down experience at all.Originally Posted by Craterus

This bug is rather bad, actually. i had a single unit of cavalry with one man in it (plus his horse ofcourse) with 3 silver chevrons. I retrained it and it still had three silver chevrons!
What's already been said here is what I know. I think it's annoying because it makes it increasingly hard to get VERY skilled men.
