I was rather frustrated when saw chevrons number reducing during a battle.
It was my spartan unit and they didn't retreat from battle , so I became quite dazzed about this question , anyone can explain it?

The game tracks individual soldiers ability. When your better soldiers die, the valour (chevrons) of the unit decreases.
The amount of chevrons a unit has is an average of all soldiers ability. It increases when your worse soldiers die off because the unit is made up of some very experienced soldiers.
You will notice a decrease in chevrons when you retrain a unit as well, because fresh, unexperienced soldiers are brought in, lowering the average valour of the unit.

Yes this is true, i saw my archer gold chevron unit decrease as my men were killed to bronze chevron.
Yes, manual and in-game help mention that, but it seems that there is a bug which makes all new fresh troops added not water down experience at all.Originally Posted by Craterus

This bug is rather bad, actually. i had a single unit of cavalry with one man in it (plus his horse ofcourse) with 3 silver chevrons. I retrained it and it still had three silver chevrons!
What's already been said here is what I know. I think it's annoying because it makes it increasingly hard to get VERY skilled men.

One more thing:
I noticed shevron disappearing during the battle , but the number of soldiers in the unit didn't decrease.
That's strange but perhaps it's an effect of morale.

Nope , they didn't try to run from the battle.
ive never encountered this bug that keeps retrained units at their elite status or whatever, everytime i retrain a unit its experience allways goes down

Actually it's a long continued feature of the total wargames.
This discussion is about experience loss DURING a battle. Not during retraining and the lack of loss for that matter.
Perhaps more thorough reading of the thread will put you back on track

no i'm not talking about retraining, Oaty. a example. you start a battle with a 5 chevron unit. and when you start the game the unit looses one chevron and goes down to 4. and after the battle it has five again, without gaining a chevron in the battle. now thats a bug, but i tought it was fixed in 1.2Originally Posted by oaty
but, now i read the thread, i know it is about dying of soldiers. when some good soldiers die, the total experiance goes down. i knew that.

and here i wasn't talking about above post, but about the title of the thread. i thought it was that old 1.1 chevron disapearing before the battle start bugOriginally Posted by Emperor Umeu 1

I find that getting experienced troops just isn't worth it for me...

Maybe your general has a valour penalty. It was certainly possible for generals to give valour bonuses in Shogun and Medieval - so that, say, a valour 2 unit on the strategic map appears as a valour 4 unit in battle. Havent noticed whether this happens in Rome, cos (a) changes in valour arent as obviously noticable with chevrons instead of numbers, and (b)the whole valour thing doesnt seem to make as much difference as it used to anyway.you start a battle with a 5 chevron unit. and when you start the game the unit looses one chevron and goes down to 4. and after the battle it has five again, without gaining a chevron in the battle. now thats a bug, but i tought it was fixed in 1.2
But anyway, i guess its possible that your general has a trait that gives a -1 morale penalty to you troops during battle (though i dunno if there even are any such traits in the game, havent looked) so that your troops are v5 on the strategic map, but v4 in battle.
There are different issues related to experience that are probably mixed up in this topic.
First of all, there is the mentioned retraining bug that is present on v1.2, but seems to work ok in previous versions, where expereince is lowered when retraining.
The second issue is related to the loss or raise of the overall unit experience when their most or least experienced soldiers die respectively.
The third strange fact about experience is its decrease by one point when a unit enters the battlefield, and then raise again after the battle. That seems to be related with the fact that the overall expereince of any unit is calculated somewhat differently on the battlefield than on the world map.
no that isn't it, it was a bug, but is fixed. but that's not what they're talking about hereOriginally Posted by Daveybaby
