Well, I haven't heard of any new film, but surely you know the French comic strip "Asterix the Gaul" (over 30 albums) by Albert Uderzo and Rene Goscinny? All movies about Asterix and Obelix are based on that. Goscinny (died 1977) who wrote most of the scenarios for the albums, used as his main historical base Caesar's "De Bello Gallico", so the comic has some real-life characters in it (Mainly Gaius Julius Caesar, but also Cleopatra, Brutus, Vercingetorix, Cassivelaunos, etc.) and based on the real Roman empire around 50 BC. All the other stuff and characters, however, are made up (although someone probably will claim it's true) and are just fun. It is really good and if you've never read it, you certainly should.
