I believes the different is that arcade mode take you to battle right away once you have engage, and the other is that it allow you to deploy your army where you want it.

Arcade mode grants the following things:

Removal of unit placement (and similiarly, pre-battle speeches)
Unlimited Ammo
Unlimited Fatigue
No morale except for routing

You are able to turn off ammo, fatigue, and morale in the config file so you can have an arcade mode-style battle in normal mode, while keeping the pre-battle speeches and unit placement

I have never used it, but I would guess it gives the Romans a great advantage - picture you making an urban cohort throw it's pila into the AI's ranks for the entire battle...
And not to mention the HA factions, firing non stop the entire battle..

No I'm probably not using arcade in the near future , I'm content with playing RTR, without the arcade features

The battles does not last long enough to let that happen anyway.

The results seems pretty clear: almost nobody uses it, I don`t use it myself either.

I play with unlimited ammo, but not arcade mode. I just feel that if I were in charge of an army, I'd quite possibly ensure that my men had more than 40 arrows a battle. (The Huns could let that many go - aimed and at power - in under 2 minutes)

I don't. Though in STW and MTW I used to play with the restricted camera off and all of the rest of the realism settings on. Though I would not use it to my advantage I always found it more fun if I could take a look at the whole battlefield.

I play with unlimited ammo. I also play as the Seleucids, so that makes it a feature against me. I believe in the logistics of war. You don't merely keep a handful of arrows, you have many. And in a battle, you normally constantly have runners bringing more ammo to the ranged units.

The javelin throwing is odd though. They shouldn't even have as many as they do in normal game. Is there a way to reduce ammo? We could make the javelin throwers have much less ammo (3-10), but do massive morale and health damage, along with armour peircing.

They are so ugly up close, not to mention covered with ticks! They also like to eat roofs apparently............


Back to the topic:

IMHO, the main feature in total war games are the battles, dumb them down and the game is empty.

It's also thanks to this SM that RTW was rushed, creating the horrid problems we have today e.g. Save/Load bug, crap AI.

What ever makes the game fun i guess I just wish that some arcadish features didn't make it into the regular game. They should have three modes,

1:arcade
2:regular
3:total war style

That way they can please *EVERYONE*

Yep I feel that same way too, rome total war could hae improve so much better if they put more time into the ai and other area that they should instead of just sell out.

I had a couple of custom battles in arcade mode. I actually had a lot of fun that I wasn't expecting. Archers and missile troops become overpowered thanks to their non-stop barriage of missiles, but infantry get stuck in and have a good old fight. None of that 'charge your cavalry into the back of the enemy and they'll rout and all be dead in 5 seconds' nonsense. Units rout, but not until they're almost all dead anyway. And the lack of fatigue means those that rout probably have a greater chance of running away because they don't run at 1mph like exhausted units tend to.

I didn't have so much fun when I had a siege battle in arcade mode. I lost about 400 Germans to arrows before I managed to even get up the first wall.

I think Arcade mode is ok for the odd battle, but I wouldn't want to play a campaign in it. It's a shame CA have made it so you either have a set amount of ammo/morale/fatigue restrictions or none at all. Better if there was the option to have different amounts of bonuses: say +50%, +100%, or even +500%. That way you don't have to go to extremes, nor would you need basic morale/ammo mods.
