Constantinople was the biggest crossroad in medieval times.... It was a cultural, religios and economic centre.... That's why the Turks wanted it so much... And also, the Silk Road was passing through Constantinople....

the tarim basin in central asia was for the longest time the crossroads between iran, china and the steppe nomads.

You can consider the Levant as the crossroads of the ancient world pre-Rome also, being the place where Egyptian, Greek (and all the other Aegean-ers), and Mesopotamian-Persian cultures meet - and home to the seafaring Phoenicians.
