Default Andromeda finale: boy did that suck

I watched the show in its first couple of seasons, and although cheesy, it did have some potential. I started to tune out, though, when they started simplifying the plotlines, doing one-off shows rather than carrying storylines through several episodes, and eliminated the cool, original theme for a bland, generic, space opera theme. Tyr left soon after-- I think he could see it was getting worse. But I figured I'd tune in for the finale to see how it all ended up.

    Yeccch. What utter crap.

Almost a textbook case in how to ruin a show: underestimate your audience and play by the numbers rather than taking some chances.

Andromeda has sucked ever since the guy who made it good (Executive Producer Wolfe) left in the middle of season 2. the reason he left was precisely because the people above him told him he would have to dumb-down the show and make it suck in order to appeal to a wide audience

plus coincidently, the utterly brilliant Rev actor also left in that same episode

in my view Andromeda is great for the first 1.5 seasons. but as of the episode Ouroboros and beyond (when Wolfe quit), it turned instantly into garbage. which is a real tragedy

for casual viewers, an easy way to check this is: if Trance ain't purple in the episode you're watching, then you're watching the dumbed-down garbage shell of the great show Andromeda once was

    What happened?

I watch it now and then, some of it is good, but just irritates me. The new Battlestar Galactica is billion times better.

    what happened is:

Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda co-creator Robert Hewitt Wolfe today announced he no longer serves as executive producer on the show, which will soon be retooled into a more action-oriented show with a focus on stand-alone episodes.

"You're probably wondering what the hell happened," Wolfe wrote at the Slipstream BBS. "Short answer: Television happened."

Wolfe left the show in late September, during the production of the twelth episode of the season, 'Ouroboros'. Wolfe said the reason for his departure was a creative conflict over the direction Andromeda was taking. While Wolfe had always envisioned a complex arc-based storyline, production companies Tribune Entertainment and Fireworks as well as series star Kevin Sorbo (Dylan Hunt) felt the show had to be more episodic.

"Basically, they want the show to be more action driven, more Dylan-centric, and more episodic," Wolfe explained. "They also want more aliens, more space battles, and less internal conflict among the principal characters. Also, they want a lot less continuity so as not to confuse the casual or new viewer with too much backstory. And finally, they wanted to rework the visual signature of several of the characters, most especially Trance and Rommie, but also Dylan (less uniforms, more civvies)."

The news was first announced by Sorbo, who also serves as executive producer on the show, in the latest edition of the British Cult Times Magazine. In a short news item, Sorbo confirmed the reasons for the split. "Robert is a genius, but was developing stories that were too complicated and too clever for the rest of us to understand," he told the magazine. "What we now have is a team of very talented people who write standalone stories that can, on occasion, blend together to form a story arc. That simple 'turn-up-tune-in' attitude was what was missing. Now we have that, I really feel we're on track towards making Andromeda an outstanding show."
which basically is just a nice way of saying that they were gonna take everything that made the show great, flush it down the toilet, and change the format in such a way that the show was guaranteed to turn into a vastly inferior piece of garbage when compared to what it started out as. all so that average joe moron could enjoy it.

the Sorbo statement is extremely ironic... in actuality, with those ideas they took an outstanding show offtrack in the worst way imaginable.

as for the new Battlestar...i found that to be a big huge offensive smutfest in most of the episodes that i saw. it'd be nice if even SciFi didn't have to be corrupted with so much smut to be "cool" these days

oh, sorry for misundertanding your question above then. ah well, still a informational quote which is good for anyone curious i suppose

and yeah i meant all the sex in BattleStar...it's not necessary. SciFi should be ok for kids...but Battlestar certainly is not due to all the unnecessary and gratuitious sex in it

It is aimed more at adults, that is why it is on late.

It is also more volent and the story is more complicated.

I love the new BSG. And there you can see story arcs-- the one with the guy and the cylon he doesn't know is a cylon trapped on Caprica, for example, or the cylon detector, etc--and complexities that are far beyond Andromeda. I lament because the first season and a half of Andromeda was quite good.
