i think no because total war games are AWSOME!!!!!!!!!
I play in a large scale game every day, its not better, but it pays the bills. Wait thats reality, not a game, well time to rethink reality.

It is not complete until the overwieght female vocalizes.
Pinky : Gee Brain, what do you want to do tonight?
Brain : The same thing we do every night Pinky. Try to take over the world!
Yes....Medieval: Total War, Viking INvasion, and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, as some examples.
In my opinion that is a silly question. Of course there are better games. From my point of view. Better non-idiot RTS like RTW? Sure, RTRsprings to mind, but also I have always loved STW too.
I think the question needs to be phrased better myself.
Other games I would put as 'better', Fire Emblem (the GBA one here in the states), FF VI, VII, Chrono Trigger (can you see the RPG bent?), M1 Tank Platoon....
But as far as RTS go, the Total War series is the 'best' I can think of.

Mark Twain 1881"If you don't want to work, become a reporter. That awful power, the public opinion of the nation, was created by a horde of self-complacent simpletons who failed at ditch digging and shoemaking and fetched up journalism on their way to the poorhouse."
yes, there are many hundreds of games better than the dreadful rtw, imo.
now i'm here, and history is vindicated.

And since it is only recently in store who knows if it doesn't has a nasty bug like the save/load thing.
Axis & Allies I dont know, I found the Close Combat serries pretty good as for a WW2 game, but that are just obsolete games.

kind of an odd question...it's difficult to compare games of all stripes to one specific game (ie: R: TW)
what is better when comparing games across all genres is destined to be highly subjective
that said, i would say yes there are many better games than the TW game. but the question is so abstract that it's hard to qualify that statement with concrete tangibles
I fancy that this question will be answered defferently by the same person depending on mood, etc. Still, overall there is no real equivalent to RTW. Warcraft and Doom III (however attractive) are jokes as far as replayability IMO. Warcraft in particular is insanely primitive, comparatively speaking.
Neverwinter is perhaps somwhere near as fun as RTW (though a different genre).
BTW, clayton ballentine, I found your signature more interesting than your query/poll.
What exactly does this mean?
"i am almost an historian"
Just curious.
Hear me:
There are many ways to power.
But know this: while strength is important, it is the most rigid tree that is shattered by the storm, just as hard stones are lifted and hurled by the wind.
When the calm comes and soft rains fall, they fall upon the living grasses that laugh at the storms.

Knights and merchants. I just digged that one up from under a huge pile of manuals and installed it again and even though the game is very old it still rules. For it's time it was simply amazing and even now the game is still pretty good an lot's of fun.
Wheel down, wheel down to southward! Oh, Gooverooska, go!
And tell the Deep-Sea Viceroys the story of our woe;
Ere, empty as the shark's egg the tempest flings ashore,
The Beaches of Lukannon shall know their sons no more!

Strategy game = no.
